Chapter 392
"What exactly happened four years ago when the quadruplets were born?" Ivan started slowly.
He had looked at the news from four years ago, where the reporters vividly described the events of that one night, although the accounts were a mixture of truth and fiction.
What he knew for certain was that on the night Haley gave birth, she didn't go to the hospital. Instead, she gave birth to the quadruplets in the DeRoss family's warehouse.
The average person going through labor and childbirth is like walking through death's door, and Ivan couldn't imagine how she had managed to give birth to four children successfully...
Moreover, he had heard that on that night, the DeRoss f amily's warehouse had caught fire...
Haley pursed her lips tightly, her expression calm, "Keith and Owen were the first to come out. The two children were not breathing when they were born, so I thought they were..." Her voice choked for a moment as she continued, "Emily took the two children away, and I didn't know where she had gone, but I always thought the children were dead..."
Her eyelids drooped, hiding all the emotions in her eyes.
Ivan felt as if he was cruelly ripping open her scars that had already scabbed over.
He apologized with some guilt, "I'm sorry, it's all my fault. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have had to suffer all this..."
"It's okay, it's all in the past."
Haley lifted her head, her eyes clear and calm once more.
All the pain she had endured over the years had become mere smoke in her past. The woman before him was far from fragile now.
Ivan just watched her intently.
In his mind, he pictured a woman from five years ago, her face slowly merging with Haley's.
No wonder he felt no desire towards Emily. She was Haley all along.
This woman had belonged to him five years ago. She was his woman.
Suddenly, the ringtone of his phone broke the silent atmosphere of the hospital room.
Ivan glanced at the caller I.D.—it was Mrs. Winston—and he gestured for Haley to be quiet.
As soon as he answered, Mrs. Winston's anxious voice came through, "Ivan, I heard you got shot! What actually happened?"
Ivan furrowed his brows and spoke coolly, "That's just how Alfred is. I'm fine, getting discharged tomorrow."
He was ready to hang up when Mrs. Winston said coldly, "Wait, I've heard that you didn't have twins four years ago, but quadruplets?"
Ivan glanced at Haley instinctively and then replied, "Mom, where did you hear all this?"
Although Mrs. Winston had not been in Cuenca for many years, she made it clear she was aware of recent events. "You and the DeRoss family's private matters are none of my concern," she began with an icy tone, "but the blood of the Winston family must be recognized, and the Winston children must honor their heritage."
Her last words were spoken loudly, and Haley could hear them from where she stood. Her thoughts immediately went to Ethan. When he found out that a child of the Patel family was abroad, his attitude had been arrogant and rude. To Haley, Mrs. Winston seemed no different at that moment. She wondered what Ivan might be thinking.
After Ivan hung up the phone, Haley was the first to speak. "Mrs. Winston, I will not give up custody of Todd and Angela. No matter what you try, I will not yield!"
Ivan furrowed his brow. "When did I ever say I was going to fight you for custody?"
Haley's defensive posture softened as she calmly asked, "Then what do you mean?"
