Chapter 874

The Winston family's crib, a big ol' seaside villa halfway up the mountain, was lookin' sharp with its poppin' garden, and yeah, it was pretty close to the resort project.

As soon as the ride stopped, Haley turned to Ivan, eyeing his chest, and whispered, "You sure you don't need a doc?"

"It's just a scratch," Ivan said, brushing her hair back. "You need to catch some Z's tonight. Tomorrow, some tech wizards are comin' over to try and nuke that program inside you."

Haley's lips twitched, but she kept quiet.

She knew the chip game well enough to realize they couldn't kill the program without the original data.

But she didn't wanna let Ivan down. Might as well give it a shot, right? What else could they do?

Next morning, bright and early at seven, there was a ruckus downstairs. Haley got dressed and headed down to find Ivan chattin' with four programmers.

She plopped down next to Ivan, answering the geeks' questions.

They hooked her up with some wires, a tiny electric current zapping through her, making her squirm all morning.

"Sorry, Mr. Winston, we can't find the original chip. This Bio-intelligent Chip is made from plant and animal cell membranes. It gets absorbed into the blood. The chip in Mrs. Winston's body has already merged with her blood, and we can't destroy it."

Ivan's face went dark. He took a deep breath and asked slowly, "So, who can destroy a Bio-intelligent Chip?"

"The manufacturer," one of the programmers said, all nervous. "Find them, and you can shut it down from the backend."

Ivan's lips tightened, his eyes growing darker.

He'd shot Isabel, and it ended tragically. If he'd known this would happen, he would've never pulled the trigger. But regrets? Nah, not in this world.

"Thanks for trying," Ivan said to the shaky programmers. "I'll have someone take you back."

After they left, the villa went dead quiet.

Haley leaned against Ivan and whispered, "Ivan, we can't rush this. We gotta take it slow."

As a hacker, she was also trying to break into the manufacturer's backend. Once she had control, things would get easier.

Ivan gently patted her back and said, "Isabel's maid is comin' to Watertown today. I'll grill her myself later; we should find out who made the chip."

Just as he finished, his phone buzzed.

"Boss, we're in Watertown. Where to now?"

Ivan gave the villa's address.

Haley picked up a book and smiled, "Take your time interrogating downstairs. I'm beat, so I'll read and nap for a bit."

Ivan nodded and walked her upstairs, closing the door softly behind him.

Once the door shut, Ivan's face twisted with worry. For the first time, he hated himself for being so helpless. He couldn't even save his beloved wife.

Soon, there was a knock at the door. Two bodyguards in black brought in a maid.

The maid, shaking like a leaf, clung to Ivan's pant leg, begging, "Mr. Winston, please let me go. Miss Spencer is dead, and I won't do anything wrong. Please, let me go."

Ivan shoved her away and stepped on her hand, full of disdain.
