Chapter 214
When had he ever said he wanted to invite Haley for a meal?
But now that Owen put it that way, if he denied it, wouldn't it look like he was being stingy over a simple meal?
Ivan gave a nod, his tone indifferent. "If you're free, please come over to my place for a casual meal."
As he spoke, Haley noticed a bright gleam in Angela's eyes, shining brightly.
She still couldn't figure out why her daughter was so taken with Ivan.
Ever since Angela called him "Daddy" that day, she hadn't spoken a word...
In truth, she hoped Angela would spend more time with Ivan, but she feared that if they got too close, it would be "Daddy" this and "Daddy" that...
And if that happened, the one left feeling awkward would be her.
Seeing Haley's silence, Alfred thought she might be reluctant to go and hurriedly chimed in, trying to sway her, "Our chef is preparing to make some chicken soup and fresh seafood today, Haley. It's incredibly nourishing and may be beneficial for your wellness, especially in this season..."
He was mid-praise when a figure caught his eye, stopping him in his tracks. "Miss DeRoss?"
At his exclamation, everyone in the vicinity looked up...
Emily's lips slowly curled into a stiff smile.
She had intended to hide away at first, but the scene before her was too jarring; she was so angry it clouded her judgment.
By the time she collected herself, Alfred had already spotted her.
Any attempt to flee now would only make things worse...
With a forced smile, Emily approached. "Ivan, I'm here to pick up Owen from the hospital..."
Ivan met her with a cold stare and said nothing.
Emily felt her heart ache with anger.
She had a toy in hand, hoping to win over Owen and perhaps his favor, but she feared Owen calling her 'mother', which if Haley hears it, would give everything away...
Owen had no time to spend being angry, so he nestled in Haley’s arms, chatting happily, "Haley, my place is so fun now! They constructed a playground with swings, a carousel, and a slide in the backyard. I'm going to take Angela with me to the playground later..."
Haley ruffled his hair and smiled. "Well, Angela can thank you for that, can't she?"
Ivan interjected indifferently. "It's windy outside. Angela might not take it well. Play inside instead."
Owen pouted, discontent. "It's not as fun inside..."
The three of them talked as if they were an intimate family, ignoring everyone else.
The venom in Emily’s eyes could almost be seen forming.
She knew she had to keep her cool, she knew she had to make herself less conspicuous, yet she was so rattled by the scene that she couldn't control her actions.
With a fake smile plastered on her face, she stepped forward, aggressively wedging herself past Haley. "Owen..."
Before she could continue, Owen started yelling in distress.
"You old witch, what are you doing here? You bumped into Haley, why don't you say sorry? Forget it, I don’t want your apology; just disappear from my sight. The last person I want to see is you!!"
Each of Owen's words struck Emily with a sense of humiliation.
These words weren't new to her, but this time, being ridiculed right in front of Haley...
She felt like a complete joke in Haley's presence.
"Miss DeRoss, let me take you home," Alfred interjected hastily, rising to his feet.
Every time Owen bumped into Emily, trouble was inevitable. Alfred dreaded these confrontations and wanted nothing more than to whisk her away and restore peace.
