Chapter 823 What's so Funny

Haley ultimately couldn't escape Ivan's clutches of evil. He pinned her down on the bed, having sex intensely before getting up.

She looked at the deep red kiss marks on her neck, feeling like crying but without tears.

"Ivan, you bastard!" She cursed angrily through gritted teeth while putting on makeup.

Ivan leisurely put on his suit, looking satisfied, "I'll take you there later."

Haley ignored him with a snort.

Fortunately, the dress Cauth had custom-made for Haley was relatively conservative, hiding the kiss marks on her neck perfectly. She didn't have to worry about unwanted gossip.

Once she was dressed, she headed downstairs. Alfred had already taken the four kids to school. In just two weeks, the kids would be on winter break, and another two weeks after that would be Christmas.

This would be Haley and the kids' first Christmas in the country, and she found herself quietly looking forward to it.

Ivan dropped Haley off at the hotel entrance.

"Call me when the event is wrapping up, and I'll come pick you up," he said in his deep, husky voice from the car.

He really wanted to attend the event with her, but he knew she had her own plans. He had to let her face everything on her own.

"Don't worry about me; I've got everything under control," Haley replied, giving him a parting kiss before getting out of the car.

As soon as she stepped out, the cold wind hit her, biting through the winter chill. She shivered involuntarily.

It was freezing. Thankfully, the snow had stopped; otherwise, Ivan would have found every excuse to keep her from attending the event.

Haley knew Ivan's eyes were fixed on her back as she walked away. She straightened her posture and walked towards the ballroom with a calm and composed demeanor.

Before she reached the door, she ran into members of the Martinez family.

Haley had already told Steven and Justin to make sure Amara stayed home. Given Amara's age and the cold weather, it seemed like a hardship for her to come out. Yet, here she was, flanked by Steven and Justin, who were helping her inside.

"Grandma, why aren't you at home resting?"

Haley hurried over, and Steven made way for her.

Amara grasped Haley's hand with a warm smile. "It's your big day, so of course, I had to come and support you."

Haley managed a resigned smile. "Let's get inside then; it's warmer in there."

As she spoke, a sneer cut through the air.

Turning her head, Haley met Barbara's mocking gaze.

Barbara hadn't wanted to come, but her family insisted. They said the Lumi family was a big name in Watertown, and it would be beneficial for her to make connections. Since the Martinez family was attending, Barbara tagged along.

But seeing Haley looking so stunning and elegant, despite her scars, made Barbara uncomfortable. She thought, 'How is it that Haley, who should have looked worse, manages to steal the spotlight?'

Haley wore a faint smile as she met Barbara's eyes. "Barbara, what's so funny?"

She had applied heavy makeup today, concealing her scars as much as possible, leaving only faint traces visible.
