Chapter 233
Ivan fetched a damp towel from the bathroom. He stood by the bed, leaning down, his voice gentle. "Let me cool you down."
His hand reached out. His manly scent enveloped the room.
Haley was alarmed, her pupils contracting. She curled up, retreating to the corner of the bed.
She grabbed a pillow and thrust it forward, her voice laced with panic.
"Don't come any closer, don't touch me... Get out, get out, don't touch me..."
Desire flared in her eyes, but they were tainted by horror.
Ivan pressed his lips together. "I won't touch you. I'm just trying to cool you down."
His voice snapped Haley out of her trance. It was Ivan before her, not the demon from five years ago.
Her voice trembled. "Mr. Ivan, could you please take me to the hospital?"
Ivan frowned in annoyance. That thought utterly escaped his mind. He had been misled by that unreliable bastard, Louis.
Slipping off his suit jacket, he said firmly, "Put this on; I'm going to carry you off the cruise ship."
Haley reached out to take the clothes, but her arm seemed utterly weak. The moment the fabric touched her fingertips, it slipped and tumbled onto the bed. She shivered as her hands fumbled in vain to grasp the suit.
"Let me do it," came a low, soothing voice.
As Ivan bent down to assist her, Haley cringed in terror. The man's scent was haunting. It was a relentless reminder of the sheer horror she had encountered five years ago. If not for the recent distressing run-in with a demon from her past, she might have mistaken Ivan for that same person from five years back.
"I won't hurt you, don't be afraid." Ivan's voice was deep and cold, exuding a bizarre magnetism that gradually eased Haley's tension.
He gently draped his suit jacket over her. Then, cradling Haley in his arms, he carried her with swift strides out into the night.
While Haley's face was buried in the folds of the jacket, she nonetheless drew the gazes of many.
"Is that Mr. Ivan carrying Haley in his arms?"
"The woman in the purple gown can only be Haley. She’s like a siren, ensnaring Mr. Ivan's heart."
"Where is Mr. Ivan taking her?"
"Where else? Off to a hotel, I bet!"
"My heart is broken."
"And my dreams are destroyed."
Amid the murmurs of countless women, Ivan brought Haley to the car. She curled up on the back seat, her body quaking, her consciousness fraying at the edges.
Buzz!
Haley’s phone trembled to life.
With immense effort, she squinted at the caller ID and just like that, her mind sharpened significantly.
Leaning against the seatbelt for support, she murmured, "Mr. Ivan, could you take a call for me? Just say I'm in the restroom and can't come to the phone."
Her voice was so hoarse it broke. If Todd heard her like this, he would worry. She couldn’t bear to add to his concerns.
Without taking his hands off the steering wheel, Ivan said, "Your son is smart. Do you really think he will believe that?"
Haley gripped the phone tighter.
Yes. Todd was smart. Having Ivan take the call might only heighten Todd’s suspicions.
Taking a deep breath and biting hard on the tip of her tongue, she managed to answer, "Hey Todd, I'm a bit tied up right now."
