Chapter 689

The four of them sat at a window-side table.

The two blonde youths seemed to rarely dine out; they grabbed the menu and ordered a ton of dishes, filling the table.

Thomas, being well-off, nonchalantly remarked, "Just eating isn't enough. let's add a few bottles of your favorite drinks to the order."

The two immediately ordered several bottles of expensive whiskey.

The table was filled with local delicacies, but Haley showed no interest.

Sitting at the table with a faint smile, Haley asked, "Kuer, have you been a longtime resident here?"

Kuer Davis, while eating meat, replied, "I'm undocumented, so I can only get by here. I used to make a living by collecting protection fees, but now..."

At this point, Kuer paused, glanced around with his small eyes, and then lowered his voice. "Since the new leader took over, we're not allowed to collect protection fees anymore. We can't make any money and are almost starved to death. Ellenstein, do you know how long it's been since I have had a sip of strong liquor? I dearly miss that flavor."

Haley tapped her fingers on the table and asked calmly, "If the Black Gang won't let you survive, can't you join another organization?"

"Don't even mention it," the other youth said dejectedly. "As soon as Leonardo took over, he drove all the other organizations out of the Hinterlands. Now this place is all under Leonardo's control."

"Fuck, a guy from H country is in charge of us. It's infuriating," Kuer cursed, slapping the table. "I hate people from Country H the most, and now we're under that guy's control with no way out."

Thomas cleared his throat.

Kuer quickly said, "Ellenstein, you're different from the people in your country. You're our best partner. Just say the word, and we'll go all out for you."

Thomas patted his shoulder and said indifferently, "Is the boss you used to follow still with the Black Gang?"

Kuer's face changed. "He assaulted an underage girl and was caught by Leonardo, who sent him to a neighboring country's prison."

Haley's fingers paused.

In such a chaotic place, killing someone wasn't a big deal.

But this new leader incarcerated a subordinate for a minor offense.

Haley felt that this new leader genuinely sought to reform the place, but starting such drastic reforms right after taking office would likely offend many people.

For instance, Kuer began vehemently criticizing the new policies after indulging in food and drink.

Thomas originally wanted to use these two to meet higher-level leaders, but that path was clearly blocked. He was about to go pay the bill.

Suddenly, a group of people walked towards their table.

"Where are you from?"

A burly man put his foot on a chair and said menacingly.

A group of his underlings surrounded them, all with hostile expressions.

Kuer turned pale with fright. "York, we've been behaving ourselves these days, no stealing or robbing."

The man named York waved his hand, pushing Kuer and the other youth aside. He stared at Haley with interest and smiled, "A woman from H country, huh? You do look interesting. How much for a night?"

Haley's face instantly turned cold.

Thomas stood up and blocked her, saying amiably, "She's not like the women on the street. Don't get it wrong."

"Where did this scum come from? Get lost!"
