Chapter 871
Jared was on the line. Ivan squinted and picked up.
"Boss, Martin slipped away about half an hour ago, but we got him back."
Ivan's eyes narrowed. "Keep him locked down tight. No chances for him to bolt again."
"Got it, Boss. I've got ten more guys guarding the basement. Even if he's got superpowers, he ain't getting out."
Ivan hung up, still frowning.
Haley touched his brow gently. "Ivan, it's gonna be okay. We'll sort this out."
Ivan gave her a soft pat on the back. "Let's head home. We gotta come up with a story for the kids."
On the drive back, Haley and Ivan brainstormed excuses, and soon they pulled up to the Winston family villa.
The kids were already home from kindergarten, chatting with Brenda in the living room.
As soon as Haley and Ivan walked in, the kids swarmed them.
Owen piped up, "Mommy, weren't you supposed to be resting? Why'd you go out?"
Angela tilted her head. "Daddy, you said you'd take care of Mommy. You didn't keep your promise."
"Mommy, why are you in your pajamas?" Todd asked, frowning.
Keith's brows furrowed too. "And you're wearing slippers."
Ivan had grabbed those slippers from the car trunk for Haley to wear.
Haley smiled. "Daddy took me for a quick walk nearby. I didn't bother changing. Why so surprised?"
Brenda, sitting on the sofa, frowned. Two hours ago, Haley and Ivan had a blowout in the bedroom, and Haley stormed off with Ivan hot on her heels.
For a second, Brenda thought Martin was back. Haley only loses it like that when Martin's around.
But seeing Ivan walk in, Brenda knew she was overthinking. Maybe she was just too stressed about Martin lately.
Brenda sighed and stood up to head upstairs.
Ivan called out calmly, "Mom, hang on. I need to talk to you."
Brenda paused, a bit taken aback. Ivan hadn't called her "Mom" since he got back from abroad. Even Haley just called her Mrs. Winston. Pushing down her mixed feelings, Brenda said, "Ivan, go ahead. I'm listening."
"Haley and I are planning to move out for a month," Ivan said evenly. "We need you to look after the kids."
Brenda was shocked, her lips trembling slightly. "Ivan, if you don't want to live with me, I can move out. You don't have to do this."
"Mom, that's not it," Haley said with a smile. "I'm running for the Lumi Group heir. There's an issue with the resort project, and I need to stay close to the site. Ivan's worried, so he's coming with me."
