Chapter 315

Haley glanced at the caller ID. She stared at the number for a few seconds before answering the call.
"Is this Ms. Haley DeRoss?" a weary voice came through the phone.
Haley furrowed her brow and responded quietly, "Speaking. May I ask who this is?"
"I'm Jeremy's father," Ethan replied slowly. "Do you have a moment to talk?"
A lump formed in Haley's throat. The thing she feared the most since her children had been exposed had finally happened. Jeremy might make concessions for the sake of the company.
Still, the older generation, who placed immense importance on lineage, would only allow their blood to remain within their family folds.
Haley pressed her lips together and asked, "What do you want to talk about, Mr. Ethan?"
"You've raised that child yourself, so for us—the Millers—to whisk away custody would be heartless, unjust. Let's talk about custody later," Ethan spoke deliberately. "But we must see the child. I suggest you bring the child to Xyleria, or perhaps Jeremy could come back to Xyleria with the kid..."
"Impossible!" Haley rejected the idea with an icy tone. "My children have nothing to do with the Millers," she said, her lips pressed tightly together.
"Ms. Haley, don't you find your statement a bit absurd? How could you have given birth to twins all on your own?" Ethan chuckled lightly. "You should count your blessings that Jeremy has had only one son all these years; if not, where would that leave your son and daughter? I've already spoken to Jeremy's wife about this, and she's agreed to welcome the twins back into the Miller family. What more can you ask for?"
"If you intend to fight me for the kids, you can talk to my lawyer."
Haley ended the call abruptly.
She gazed out at the bustling streets, a sense of foreboding lingering in her heart.
After bringing the twins home that night, Haley's phone rang again, with the same area code from Xyleria but a different caller.
She considered hanging up.
But then, she wanted to get all potential vital information.
In matters of litigation, it was best to know as much as your adversary.
She wiped her hands and answered the phone, greeted by the gentle voice of a woman.
"Hello, Ms. Haley. This is Jeremy's wife."
A thin sneer formed on Haley's lips.
The Millers were all pitching in to take the children. She wondered how Mrs. Miller managed to make such a call while swallowing her pride.
"Hello, Mrs. Miller. What can I do for you?"
"Ms. Haley, I know what you're thinking, but I had to make this call," Mrs. Miller said candidly. "I will not divorce Spencer; it's simply not an option. If you wish to avoid having your children be the subject of scandal, it would be best for you to send them to the Miller family in Xyleria soon. I assure you, whatever my son has, your twins will have as well, without any favoritism."
Haley laughed. "You're still clinging to such a husband like a treasure. Aren't you disgusted?"
"That night five years ago was a mishap. He was plied with drinks and lost control—it's a common story. But you—" Mrs. Miller let out a scoff. "You calculated your way into my husband's bed and became the other woman. And you didn't even have the decency to reflect on it. Instead, you secretly gave birth to my husband's child. Do you think you can use that child to climb the social ladder? I'm sorry to break it to you, but that's never going to happen in this lifetime."
Haley suddenly found herself feeling a twinge of pity for Mrs. Miller.
Her husband had been unfaithful and fathered two children out of wedlock, and yet she still stood up for him.
But after that fault five years ago, she and Mrs. Miller had stood on opposing sides despite Haley's reluctance to see such a situation unfold.
