Chapter 384
van leaned back against the headboard, his gaze indifferent as he observed her. His dark pupils mirrored her silhouette.
In truth, she didn't owe him anything.
The debt actually lay with him.
For four years, he had protected the wrong person.
He had let his two sons believe a villain was their mother.
He had deprived Todd and Angela of a father since their birth.
He had caused Haley to endure immense suffering as a woman.
"I'm sorry," Ivan said slowly, breaking the silence.
Haley pressed her lips together.
The man had just saved her and had only just regained consciousness. She couldn't lash out at him.
She pushed down the emotions welling up inside her and was about to speak when Alfred knocked and entered. "Miss DeRoss, Angela has been looking everywhere for you. It would help if you hurried back. I'll take care of things here with the sir."
Haley swallowed the words she had been about to say and replied with a subdued voice, "I'll get going, then."
She turned and walked out of the room, closing the door gently behind her.
Alfred asked with respect, "How are you feeling now? Are you any better?"
"A minor injury, nothing serious," Ivan responded coolly. "How's the situation with Emily been handled?"
"She attempted kidnapping and murder. That's a serious offense, punishable by at least eight years. But I made a call to the chief of police, and it'll likely end up being at least fifteen years."
Ivan's lips curled into a cold smile.
A mere fifteen years in prison seemed like a light sentence for Emily.
However, after fifteen years, once Emily was freed, a significant portion of her life would be in ruins. and
"The incident was a big deal; I've managed to keep the press at bay," Alfred ventured. "I still can't wrap my head around it. Why would Miss DeRoss kidnap Keith? He's her flesh and blood! They say even a tiger doesn't eat its cubs. What kind of madness drove her to kidnap her son?"
Ivan spoke plainly, "She isn't Keith and Owen's mother; it's a case of mistaken identity from four years ago, the paternity report was faked."
Alfred was stunned.
...
Haley drove to the Winston residence.
It was now 10 p.m., and the night enveloped everything in darkness. The winding mountain road was deserted at this late hour, with little traffic in sight.
She stepped out of the car, and the estate's staff waited respectfully at the entrance to let her in.
Todd, Owen, and Angela sat on the floor in the living room, playing with building blocks. Owen usually smiled, but today, his expression was somewhat downcast.
As soon as she walked in, Owen put down his blocks and approached, his eyes quickly welling up with tears. "Haley, is Father still in the hospital?" he asked.
"Ivan is okay," Haley soothed, touching his little face. "I'll take you to the hospital to see Ivan tomorrow, okay? Don't cry."
Owen sniffled, trying to hold back his tears.
Haley spoke softly, her voice gentle with concern. "Where's Keith?"
Owen pointed toward the stairs, indicating that Keith was upstairs.
Haley patted Todd and Angela's heads reassuringly before making her way upstairs.
She carefully opened the bedroom door, finding the room in darkness except for the faint glow filtering in through the window. In the dim light, she could make out a small figure lying on the bed.
She approached silently and took a seat beside the bed.
Unable to resist, she gently reached out and touched Keith's face.
