Chapter 178

Panic and anxiety filled Emily's eyes.

She couldn't do it!

Absolutely not!

Years ago, when she arranged the DNA paternity test for the child, she had secretly swapped her sample for some of Haley's hair left behind at the DeRoss residence!
As they prepared to draw her blood in front of Ivan, Emily knew her web of deceit was about to unravel.

"Let go of me! Ivan, let me go!" she struggled desperately.

Ivan turned to her, his gaze chilly and piercing, "What are you resisting?"

His eyes seemed to see right through her, as if they could penetrate to the darkest, most sinister thoughts at the bottom of one's heart...

Emily shuddered involuntarily.

"Ivan, I'm telling you, I'm not Rh-negative. Stop wasting time on me! I'll call my friends right now and see if they know someone who is..." she stammered.

Ivan responded calmly, "I've already sent people out for it. First, you're coming with me to do the test."

"I won't go!!" Emily screamed.

She stepped back, creating a distance from Ivan's reach, gasping for air. "Owen is my son. He's been in an accident, and I'm the most worried one — as his mother! I told you I'm not Rh-negative, why are you forcing me to get tested? Ivan, you can't take your anger out on me. I had nothing to do with Owen's accident!"

After her outburst, she instantly regretted it. Ivan was someone who could not be offended, and yelling at him was likely to have dire consequences.

...

Alfred stood a great distance from the operating room door, not daring to get any closer.

Across the hall, he could see chaos by the operating room, and his heart began to race uncontrollably.

Clutching at his chest, he leaned against the wall and slid to the floor.

He buried his head in his knees and began to weep.

If only he hadn't neglected his duties, Owen wouldn't have run away from home...

If he hadn't chased so closely, Owen wouldn't have bolted from the car...

It was all his fault. Owen's accident was on him!

If Owen didn't make it, he thought, then he would follow him in death!

After attending to her own tasks, Haley sat outside the operating room. Her eyes caught sight of Alfred some distance away.

Having visited the Winston family, she recognized the butler. But what was Alfred doing crouched on the floor?

Approaching suspiciously, she was about to speak when Alfred suddenly looked up.

His aged face was etched with tears.

She asked with surprise. "Alfred, why are you crying?"

"Oh, it is on me!" Alfred broke down, sobbing in remorse, "I have failed Mr. Winston. It's all my fault. I've caused Owen's death. My only redemption is in death now! Owen, let me see you one last time. I will watch over you until the very end, and make sure you're safe from any harm..."

Haley stood silently, at a loss for words.
Seeing Alfred's tears stream down with such heart-wrenching despair, she was reminded of her own undignified weeping on the street earlier. Had she been just as unconcerned with her image?

She took a deep breath and said, “Alfred, please, stop your crying. Owen is fine…”
