Chapter 165
In the world of high society, wealth and power create a visible hierarchy among people.
But there's one sphere where neither can hold sway, and that is the realm of culture and the arts.
Consider the painters, the artists, violinists, pianists... If one of these virtuosos emerges from a rich family, that family's standing in the elite circle becomes unrivaled...
Emily clenched her fingers with a surge of excitement.
Keith was paving this path for her, surely hoping she'd one day have the confidence to marry into the Winston family.
"Grandmother, I understand, and I will practice diligently," she said.
Her face aglow with joy, Emily left the elderly lady's room.
Flora hurried over to her: "How did it go? What did the old lady say?"
Emily recounted the conversation about her piano practice.
Flora furrowed her brow, "Doesn't that sound a bit odd? Is Keith really that generous?"
"Mom, I've told you before, Keith really listens to me. I told him how much I want to marry his father, and that's why he's come up with this plan," Emily replied with a grin. "I'll learn well from Alice, and when I'm able to hold my own recitals, I'll be worthy of standing by Ivan's side."
...
After spending the afternoon at work for the DeRoss Group, Haley finished her shift and headed to the preschool to pick up her child.
"Ms. DeRoss, wait a moment." Heidi pulled her aside with a smile and said, "Today in preschool, we had a piano trial class, and Angela has a great sense for music. The piano teacher is interested in taking her on as a student. Here's the teacher's business card; give them a call if you're interested."
Haley had received her fair share of these little cards, the usual course promotions, so she didn't pay much mind to it.
On the drive back home, though, she noticed Angela tapping against the car window.
With a lollipop stick in hand, she was rhythmically tapping the glass, some knocks soft, others firm.
At first listen, it seemed like mindless tapping, but upon closer listen, Haley could make out the melody of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" played with just a lollipop.
Haley asked in surprise, “Todd, how did your sister do in music class today?”
"The teacher said she did really well and even wants to take her on," Todd replied thoughtfully. “Mommy, I think sissy really likes the piano.”
Haley was even more surprised.
She had thought the business card Heidi gave her was handed out to all parents in the class.
Turns out Angela was the only one recognized for having a piano talent.
So it wasn't just an advertisement – the piano teacher genuinely saw potential in Angela and wanted to teach her.
“Angela, would you like to take piano lessons if Mommy arranged them for you?” Haley turned and asked softly.
Her gentle gaze encouraged the little girl, but Angela just stared back with wide eyes, wordless.
If Haley hadn't heard Angela speak the night before, she would have almost thought it was a hallucination...
After Ivan left, Angela reverted to her usual self.
Haley had consulted a psychologist the previous night who had said that this was progress, but it had to be taken step by step, slowly.
But if Angela only spoke when Ivan was around, Haley had no clue how to progress gradually.
If cultivating Angela’s interests could unlock another world for her, it was worth a try.
So Haley took a detour and drove to a nearby piano store.
As soon as they entered, she noticed a spark in Angela's beautiful eyes.
It seemed they had made the right choice coming here.
