Chapter 161

Exiting the manager's office, Eva looked deflated.
Mia snorted, "New boss and the new boss is targeting you first, Eva. If you want to stay with the DeRoss Group, maybe say a few sweet words to me. I might just ask Emily to let you stick around."

Eva's gaze was complicated as she looked at her. "Aren't you worried at all?"

"Worried about what?" Mia scoffed. "I'm Emily's bestie. She hangs on my every word!"

Mia was privy to the scheme that had framed Haley, a secret that gave her leverage over Emily. It meant that Emily rarely said 'no' to her.

She looked down at Eva with arrogance. "You gave me tough looks when you were manager. But I'm not one to sweat the small stuff. Just apologize, and I'll call Emily for you."

Eva's expression darkened. Was it her giving Mia tough looks, or Mia deliberately stirring up trouble?

She drew in a deep breath. "No thanks."

She strode quickly into the records room.

Mia sneered, "Almost out on your ear, and still carrying yourself like a manager. Pathetic!"

She sashayed back to her desk and began applying nail polish, treating the office as if it were her personal vanity table.

Eva emerged with the report, her rising anger reignited by the sight of Mia's nonchalance.

She was certain that once Haley saw Mia's true performance, she'd terminate her without a second thought. But Mia was Emily's friend.

Firing Emily's friend could stir up more trouble than it was worth. Fresh into her role, the last thing Haley needed was leadership second-guessing her decisions. The disadvantages of such a move might outweigh the benefits...
As Eva walked, she pondered how to persuade Haley to take the high road and bide her time...

Just then, Haley emerged from the office, gripping her mug. She had come out for a water refill, only to catch Mia unabashedly applying nail polish in the office,a strong smell of nail polish spreading through the air.

Haley set her mug down with a clink and strode over.

“Mia, Mia...” someone murmured nearby, but Mia, humming a tune while painting her nails, didn't hear.

"Nice job on the nails. You could start your own salon with that talent."

A chilly voice floated down from above. Mia quipped back, "A salon is too much work for my delicate arms and legs..."

She stopped mid-sentence, feeling something amiss. When she looked up, she locked eyes with Haley's piercing, icy gaze.

Mia stiffened, a shiver running down her spine.

Then she chided herself for overreacting. Haley, who had been down at Emily's heels for years, couldn't possibly harm her, right?

Bolstered by this thought, Mia raised her chin to meet Haley's stare.

"Hand it over," demanded Haley, extending her hand to Eva.
