Chapter 241
As the class would be dismissed soon, the preschoolers were all packed up, waiting for their parents to pick them up and take them home. Heidi was busy maintaining order and missed the buzzing of her phone.
Just then, the principal walked in. "Todd, Angela, your father's here to pick you up."
A crease formed between Todd's brows. Angela quickly turned her head.
"Keegan..." Heidi hurried over, speaking in hushed tones, "Todd and Angela are being raised in a single-parent home by their mother..."
Keegan paused, a bit taken aback. "Is that so? Their father claimed to be waiting outside."
Heidi scratched her chin, vaguely remembering Todd's mother mentioning the children had no father. It didn't make sense for their father to appear.
"Keegan, let me take the kids out to see," she suggested.
Taking one child by each hand, Heidi could see the concern on Todd’s face as he obediently followed her to see who claimed to be their father. Angela had a faint sparkle in her eyes, seeming to be gleaming with joy and excitement.
Having spent much time with the kids, Heidi quickly sensed the little girl's emotions. She gently said, "Angela, do you want to see your dad?"
Angela didn't speak, but her bright eyes said it all.
Heidi let out a sigh.
It looked like the children's parents had split up. Perhaps their father was so busy that he could only visit every few months. In just a few short minutes, Heidi's mind had spun up her own stories.
Keegan led a line of people toward the school gates.
Sitting in her car, Haley dialed multiple times, but no one answered.
When she glanced up, she caught sight of Heidi holding the hands of two children, walking toward Jeremy's car.
Jeremy was leaning on his car, his eyes practically glued to the kids.
A tightness gripped Haley's chest.
She opened the car door and walked out, waving her hand, "Heidi, over here!"
Everyone turned to look in the direction of the voice. Heidi looked between Jeremy and Haley, then led the children in a new direction. "Todd, Angela, I'm taking you to Mommy."
It was clear to Heidi that the mother was the two children’s guardian, and she should hand them over to their mom. It wasn't her place to decide whether the mother would let the children see their father.
"Thank you, Heidi."
After expressing her gratitude, Haley took the children's hands and hurried toward the car. Angela's eyes wandered, failing to spot the familiar figure she had imagined, a tinge of disappointment coloring her gaze.
Todd's eyes were tightly narrowed as he quietly observed the man standing at a short distance. He knew very well that just moments ago, Heidi and Keegan intended to bring him and his sister to meet this man...
Todd didn't know who this stranger who claimed to be his father was. He had assumed that Ivan was their father. A whirlwind of thoughts raced through Todd's mind.
Haley, eager to get in the car, didn't notice his emotional state. She opened the door, ready to help the kids inside.
