Chapter 248

Her previously agitated mind calmed down, and she prepared the meal with ease.

She prepared a full spread—baked sweet potatoes, fried chicken wings, green beans, and salad.

Henry refused to sit at the table and instead stepped outside to stand guard in the yard.

Haley knew the Winston family had their rules on security and didn't press the issue.

A group of one adult and three kids settled down at the dining table.

"Wow, it smells amazing! I've never smelled anything this good. It must be super delicious!" Owen inhaled deeply, his face alight with joy.

Haley chuckled. "If you like it, help yourself to more."

"Well, don't mind if I do!"

Owen eagerly grabbed a fork and snatched up a chicken wing, unable to hold back his excitement. Sinking his teeth into it, Owen found the tender chicken infused with spices. Its flavor was a symphony of succulent sweetness with no hint of greasiness. Obviously, it was the best food in the world.

Mumbling through a mouth full of food, he said dreamily, "These fried chicken wings are amazing... I'm gonna eat at your house every day. Mmm, this is pure bliss... It's so delicious..."

Meanwhile, Angela's head was practically buried in her plate, ravaging her meal. In the few moments Owen had been speaking, she had devoured three wings. Todd served her another before he started on his own plate.

Watching the three young diners clear their plates, Haley felt a surge of satisfaction welling up inside her.

Just as they finished their meal, the door swung open and Henry walked in and informed, "Owen, your hour's up. It's time to head back."

Owen's mood plummeted. He pouted and said, "I don't wanna go..."

Henry, with all due respect, replied, "Mr. Ivan said if you break his promise this time, he won't allow you to come to Ms. Haley's home again."

"Just ten more minutes, please? Just let me stay a little longer..." Owen stretched out his fingers, "If Father asks, you can say we got stuck in traffic..."

Henry felt like he started to have a headache.

Even Alfred couldn't discipline Owen, and he certainly was no better.

Resigned, Henry agreed, "All right, ten more minutes."

Ten minutes later, Henry came back to remind Owen.

"Aw, just wait a bit more. Let me finish this puzzle, and then we'll go," Owen pleaded, intensely focused on the puzzle on the floor. He was frowning, scratching his head, occasionally seeking Todd's help.

Henry glanced at the puzzle, barely one-tenth done, and finally understood why Alfred had assigned him this task.

He approached Owen, saying as gently as possible, "Owen, it's already past eight, and Mr. Ivan required we should be home by 8:30 PM..."

"It's not eight-thirty yet. We'll leave then," Owen retorted without looking up, lost in a sea of puzzle pieces.

In the kitchen, Haley had been washing dishes. She wiped her hands and came out, speaking softly, "Owen, you made a promise to your daddy. You need to keep it, or else he surely won't allow you to come here again. Don't you want to visit next time?"

Owen looked up, his bottom lip jutting out in a pout, "I just want to stay with you... I've been here for so long, and you were in the kitchen the whole time. I've barely had ten minutes with you..."

Haley's heart melted.

She was about to speak when suddenly, a bright light lit up the yard. A car was approaching.
