Chapter 780
Although Haley didn't say it explicitly, Ivan could guess why Martin could brazenly move into his home.
Brenda must have played a significant role.
Since Brenda chose Martin, he no longer needed to concern himself with her.
"I'll take you to the hospital to change your dressing first."
Ivan wrapped his arm around Haley's waist and walked out.
Haley pressed her lips together, her expression complex. The resentment between mother and son, the conflict between brothers—she was at a loss for words.
Just as Haley and Ivan reached the door, they suddenly heard hurried footsteps behind them.
"You're back?" Brenda's weak voice sounded from behind.
Haley and Ivan turned around simultaneously.
They saw Brenda standing barefoot on the carpet without a coat.
Brenda was initially calm, but when she saw Ivan wearing a mask, she suddenly froze. "You're Ivan. You're not dead, Ivan. You're really not dead!"
Brenda stumbled down the stairs and threw her arms around Ivan.
Haley silently took a step back.
Ivan let Brenda hug him. After a few seconds, he said in a calm voice, "Shouldn't you be asking about Martin's whereabouts?"
Brenda's eyes widened. "Ivan, what did you do to your brother?"
A mocking smile appeared on Ivan's lips.
"Ivan, don't be like this," Brenda said, tears streaming down her face. "You and Martin are both my beloved children. No matter who gets hurt, the one who suffers the most is me. When I heard the news that you might be dead, do you know how much I suffered? I..."
"If you were in so much pain, why didn't you come looking for me?" Ivan said quietly. "It was Haley and the kids who found me and brought me home. You don't deserve to be my mother."
Ivan was about to say more when he saw the kids coming down the stairs, laughing and playing.
He softened his expression and said calmly, "I'm not a ruthless killer. Martin is alive and well; he just lost his freedom."
Brenda's body relaxed, but tears kept streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, Ivan. I really had no choice. You know that. I owed Martin. I owed him, and this was all I could do."
"What's wrong?"
Owen's playful expression turned serious as he walked over and asked worriedly.
Angela held Brenda's hand. "Grandma, don't cry. I'll get you some ice cream."
Owen's face was grave. "Grandma, what exactly happened?"
Todd remained silent.
He was always aware of emotions; he was thoughtful when silent. He quickly grasped Brenda's sadness but realized his intervention was inappropriate.
"Keith, take care of Angela and the others. I'm taking your mommy to the hospital."
Ivan held Haley as they got into the car and left.
Brenda wiped her tears and looked at Keith. She asked softly, "Keith, can you tell me how you found Ivan?"
"Daddy became a big hero," Angela said, her eyes shining. "Daddy was amazing. He caught a lot of bad guys."
"Daddy was hypnotized and lost his memory." Keith got straight to the point. "And he was badly injured. There's a long scar on his face."
Brenda pressed her lips together. No wonder Ivan had been wearing a mask; it turned out he had a scar on his face.
