Chapter 831
As Haley rolled up to the banquet hall entrance, she spotted a sleek black car chilling by the exit.
Ivan hopped out of the driver's seat with a grin and swung open the passenger door just as she got close.
He leaned in and buckled her seatbelt with care. "Why'd you drink?" he asked in a low voice.
"Just a couple sips," Haley shrugged it off. "When'd you get here?"
"Just now," Ivan said, sliding back into the driver's seat and gripping the wheel.
Cruising down the road, Ivan's deep voice filled the car, "I should've been at the banquet with you tonight."
Haley was caught off guard but quickly got it.
Tonight's banquet drama had already hit the news. Barbara had roasted her, reporters swarmed, and the gossip was flying. The internet was probably blowing up too.
Ivan must've been checking out the news about her.
Haley squeezed Ivan's hand and smiled, "If you'd shown up with me, online buzz would be: 'The Winstons Suffer Disfigurement: The Shocking Reason Behind It!' They'd probably cook up some cheesy love story."
Ivan chuckled a bit.
He'd just had facial reconstruction surgery yesterday. With his face all bandaged up, there was no way he could be in the spotlight.
But he didn't want Haley to face the rumors solo.
"Our relationship's solid. Who cares about the gossip?" Haley turned and smiled at Ivan. "How was your day at the company? Did you sort out the mess Martin left?"
Ivan's face got serious, "He was running more than one shady biotech company. There's a branch in Hinterlands, but it needs his fingerprint to unlock and issue commands. Once we get his fingerprint, I'll handle it."
As the root of all this crap, he had to destroy all the chips they developed to cut down on crime.
Haley knew about the biotech company too. A few months back, when Martin was pretending to be Sterling, he tried to get her to team up in this field, but she turned him down.
She wasn't lured by the crazy high returns, but plenty of others were, and it had already blown up big. Taking it down wouldn't be a walk in the park.
Plus, Ivan would be making enemies and might even face some nasty payback.
But Ivan wasn't scared. He was a guy with a strong sense of justice. Even with his memory gone, he kept his inner goodness.
Even when terrorists tried to sway him in a crime-ridden land, Ivan always followed his heart.
Haley's eyes sparkled, making Ivan feel all kinds of uneasy. His Adam's apple bobbed hard.
If he wasn't driving, he'd totally kiss her.
Trying to play it cool, Ivan said, "I've got a few people sending Katherine to the Hinterlands. Once we get Martin's fingerprint, we'll wrap this up quick."
Haley could feel the bottled-up passion in Ivan's voice.
