Chapter 223
Keith was taken aback. Angela was Haley's daughter...
"But Angela's super glued to Todd. It's like he's the only kid she cares about. I have no idea when she'll ever start calling me by my name..." Owen sighed deeply, his face a portrait of woe.
Keith hesitated before asking, "Her real brother?"
"Of course, her real brother!" Owen gave him another exasperated look. "Keith, didn't you dig into Haley's background? How come you're acting clueless as if you didn't know Haley had two kids?"
Keith fell silent. He had indeed looked into Haley's past. But there was no mention of her having children in the information he'd found. Which meant Haley had shielded them well; their existence remained undisclosed through any public channels. Just like Dad had protected him and Owen. So, the boy he'd encountered outside Owen's hospital room, that was Angela's brother? Barely older than four, twins with Angela? Just like him and Owen?
"Angela is definitely the prettiest girl I've ever seen. Her eyes are like shiny black grapes, super pretty. And her cheeks like marshmallows. I poked them once, so soft... If I could give her a peck, I bet it’d be sweet..." Owen rambled on, daydreaming with a lovestruck gaze.
Keith pursed his lips slightly. The thought of giving Angela a little peck crossed his mind. Why on earth was he even entertaining the idea of getting close to that woman Haley's daughter? That was nuts.
"Keith, did you hear about what that awful woman tried to do to Angela today? She almost slapped her..."
Keith turned sharply, "What did you say?"
“Remember you got that piano for the wicked woman? Angela knows how to play too. She just touched the keys when that woman shoved her off the bench and tried to hit her. Lucky for Angela, I caught the slap. Otherwise, Angela would never set foot in our house again..."
"Is Angela okay?" Keith's hands balled into fists as he asked.
"I blocked the slap for her. Angela's fine."
"That's good."
Owen remained silent.
Doesn't his brother care to ask if he's okay after taking a hit? He’s Keith's own blood!
Yet Keith didn't spare him another glance and walked out of the room.
Owen felt a sting of neglect.
Why did it seem like Keith cared more about Angela? But Angela was Haley's kid, and Keith couldn't stand Haley.
Scratching his head, Owen decided not to dwell on it and pulled the covers over himself to get back to sleep.
Back in his room, Keith dialed Emily's number without hesitation. Before he could even speak, a sobbing plea greeted him.
Hearing Emily's cries always brought discomfort, a nauseating sensation he’d never experienced before.
"Keith, what do I do...?"
Emily was seeking comfort as she always had. In the past, a few tears were enough for Keith to rush to her aid.
She believed this time would be no different.
