Chapter 886
"Your mom's got a meeting tonight, no time to hang with you guys." Ivan's voice was ice-cold, dripping with authority.
Keith had grown up under Ivan's stern watch, so he didn't even think about pushing back.
Todd looked up, stubborn as ever. "I just wanna have dinner with mom. After that, Keith and I will head home, no fuss."
Ivan frowned, about to say something, but Haley cut in. "Let the kids eat first, then they can go."
She smiled and led the kids inside. "You two chill in the living room, I'll whip up some dinner."
Haley tied on an apron and headed to the kitchen. The fridge was packed, all stocked up by Ivan while she was out cold. As she cooked, Ivan chatted with the kids in the living room.
"Why are just you two here? Where's Owen and Angela?"
Keith answered, all obedient-like, "They didn't know we came."
"Why were you hiding in the bushes?" Ivan asked, his sharp eyes on Todd.
Ivan knew Keith inside out, but he'd only spent a month with Todd. Todd was just as sharp, with a knack for reading people.
Todd met Ivan's gaze, cool as a cucumber. "I just missed mom. We know she's busy, so we hid outside. Just wanted a quick look."
Ivan didn't push further. "Winter break's coming up. Got any plans?"
Keith said, "I gotta oversee a project launch at my company."
Todd chimed in, "The program you asked me to crack is tough. Might need to spend some time on that."
"If you need help, just ask," Ivan said. "If you can connect to the program's database, let me know ASAP."
Todd looked at him, "Dad, you seem really worried about this."
"Of course," Ivan said, no hesitation. "When I was near death abroad, this guy saved me. I owe him big time."
The room went quiet, just the sounds from the kitchen. Soon, dinner was ready, and the four of them sat down.
Todd put a piece of steak in Haley's bowl, all sweet. "Mom, you must be tired from work. You've lost weight. Eat up."
Haley's heart melted. Todd was always the most thoughtful.
She thought about the years abroad. Without Todd, things would've been way different.
"Mom, have some soup." Keith placed a bowl in front of her.
"Thanks," Haley said, her heart swelling with emotion. Suddenly, her tear-filled eyes froze a bit.
