Chapter 940

"Mom's not doing so hot," Todd's voice, young but wise beyond his years, rang in Ivan's ears.

Ivan's tone, usually so gentle with Haley, was heavy now. "Todd, I'm trying to figure something out."

He'd reached out to all the top experts, only to find out that she had to fight this battle on her own.

Another option was to up her meds to keep the bad stuff in her blood in check. But the meds already had nasty side effects. Upping the dose would mess with her nerves even more.

"Dad, I know this shaman from far away," Todd said slowly. "He can do some kind of magic blood transfusion, swap out all the bad blood. Then Mom would be okay."

"Todd," Ivan looked at him. "do you even hear yourself?"

A blood transfusion, a super tricky surgery even for modern medicine, sounded even sketchier with some ancient shaman's methods.

Todd pressed his lips together. "Dad, if we keep going like this, Mom's gonna get worse. When she loses it, she'll do stuff she can't take back. She'll feel awful when she's herself again. If she stays in that guilt and regret, she'll break down. Better to take a chance than watch her suffer every day."

Ivan's fingers clenched. "What if the surgery goes wrong? What if something happens to her on the table? What if there are more side effects after?"

"Will she be okay if we do nothing?" Todd's lips tightened. "Dad, think about it for a few days. I'll talk to the shaman more, see if we can make it safer."

With that, he opened the study door to leave.

As soon as the door swung open, Owen rolled in. He rubbed his nose and asked, "What are you talking about?"

Todd's face was blank. "Nothing, let's go help Mom with dinner."

The kids headed to the kitchen. Haley, all smiles, handed out tasks. "Keith, peel the potatoes. Owen, clean the veggies. Todd, wash the tomatoes. Angela, keep an eye on the soup."

The kitchen buzzed with activity. Half an hour later, the table was loaded with food.

"Mom, you and Dad haven't had your honeymoon yet," Keith said between bites. "The Winston Group's slow right now, so Dad can take some time off to travel with you."

Owen's eyes sparkled. "I wanna go too!"

Todd shot him a cold look. "What does their honeymoon have to do with you?"

"Yeah, we'd just be in the way. The teacher said kids shouldn't bug their parents," Angela said seriously, tilting her head.

Ivan got what the kids were hinting at. He'd take Haley on a trip and then try the shaman's treatment. He didn't want to risk it, but a trip abroad did sound like a good break.

"Forget it, I don't want to travel," Haley said lazily. "I just like being home. It's so comfy here."
