Chapter 204
He had always dismissed it as nonsense, but now he realized the stories were half right. Haley had indeed given birth to twins, but they were certainly not stillborn. A well-behaved boy and a pretty girl to make anyone envious.
Alfred watched Todd for a moment and then paused. The boy reminded him of Mr. Winston in his youth, especially his posture.
This was madness.
Shaking off the thought as a flight of fancy, Alfred smiled and asked, "Your name is Todd, right? I'll just call you Todd then."
Todd replied politely, “Todd is fine.”
"Here, I've got some candy," Alfred offered, holding out a wrapped sweet he'd brought for Owen.
But Todd declined. "No thank you, Alfred. I don't eat candy."
Talking to Todd, Alfred couldn't shake a subtle sense of authority, eerily similar to speaking with the young master Keith. Despite the boy's obedient and gentle demeanor, he couldn’t understand why he had such a presence.
Trying to shake off his thoughts, Alfred turned to Angela, offering her the candy. She usually didn't like sweets, but today she accepted it graciously and stored it away carefully.
Haley's smile grew even warmer. She noticed that Angela was gradually expanding her small, enclosed world—which once only included her mom and brother—to more people like Owen, Heidi, preschool classmates, Mr. Albert, Alfred ... and Ivan.
Just as his name crossed her mind, a tall figure appeared at the doorway of the hospital room. Haley turned her head, eyes meeting Ivan’s deep, gaze.
She smiled and said, “Ivan.”
At work, she was accustomed to addressing him as Mr. Winston. In private, she'd greet him with a smile and an “Ivan.”
Maybe it was the presence of the children, but her tone was extra gentle. When she called him “Ivan”, it lingered with a faintly catching lilt, hooking right off the tip of Ivan's heart and causing ripples across his entire being.
Alfred straightened up with a hand on his back, a hint of a cryptic smile on his face. "Sir, allow me to introduce, this is Todd and Angela, Haley's children..."
Ivan nodded in recognition, "I'm aware of who they are."
Alfred stared blankly for a moment. So, he knows and he's still this close to Haley? Isn't he worried about Haley's husband showing up?
It was a moment of silent turmoil for Alfred as his gaze swept over the room's occupants. They looked, for all intents and purposes, like one big happy family. Feeling like his heart couldn't take the stress of the situation, he quickly made an excuse and stepped out of the hospital room.
"Hey Alfred, where are you going? I need someone to feed me," Owen called out, unable to feed himself because of the IV.
Haley took a seat by the bed, speaking softly, "I'll help you. Just remember, no fussing."
That brightened Owen up immediately. Alfred must really care for him, giving him such a rare chance on purpose. He obediently opened his mouth, waiting for his meal.
"Mr. Winston, I have a question for you, could we step outside to talk?" Todd approached Ivan, his voice calm and measured.
