Chapter 348
Emily lost control, grabbed Owen's hand, and yanked him towards her. Fearing the tug-of-war might hurt Owen, Haley immediately released her grip.
"Let go of me!" Owen kicked out, his little dress shoe leaving a footprint on Emily's skirt, marring the pink, velvet fabric of her gown. Emily was so incensed she thought she might explode.
She clung onto Owen's arm, determined not to let go.
Ivan's voice was ice-cold as he spoke, "Lose it again, and you can roll back to the DeRoss family." Alfred, please show our guest out."
Luckily, at that moment, no guests had arrived at the mansion door, so this outburst was not witnessed by many.
Alfred approached with respect. "Miss. DeRoss, this way, please."
Emily felt as though a bucket of cold water had been dumped on her. She abruptly came to her senses, saying, "No, I won't leave..."
She clung to Keith's hand as if grasping her last lifeline. "Keith, don't let your dad send me away. I can't leave; I'm so cold. Please let me come inside and rest a bit, okay? I won't cause any more trouble, I promise..."
She lowered her stance tremendously.
Keith's eyes flashed with disgust, mixed with a trace of pity. He pursed his lips and said, "Then, Mother, go upstairs and rest for a while. Do not attend the party tonight."
As long as she could stay, she would accept any terms.
Emily didn't dare meet Ivan's gaze; she gathered her skirt and hurried into the banquet hall.
And like that, the dramatic scene came to an abrupt end.
Todd's eyelids drooped as he came over and said quietly, "Mommy, let's head back after we've given the birthday present."
The Winston family was too complicated. It was all too easy to get bitten, and he didn't want his Mommy in such an environment.
Haley smiled and stroked his hair. "What on earth are you worrying about, honey? Later, you take your sister upstairs to play, and I'll call you when it's time to leave."
"I'll take good care of Angela, sis. Don't worry, Haley!" Owen declared, thumping his chest in assurance.
Haley nodded with a smile, and Ivan instructed Alfred to take the four children upstairs.
Once the children had left, Ivan turned to look at the woman beside him and whispered, "I did not send Emily an invitation. She was a guest invited by my mother."
Haley was taken aback for a moment.
Was this man explaining himself to her?
In truth, Emily's appearance at the Winston family event was not a surprise to her, and she didn't feel there was any need for an explanation.
She smiled. "I know. Let's go in and wish your mother a happy birthday."
She carried the birthday present in her hand, following Ivan inside.
That night, Haley was wearing a snow-colored evening gown, and under the shimmer of the crystal chandeliers, she looked ethereal and stunning.
As she and Ivan entered side by side, they instantly attracted all the attention in the room.
Mrs. Winston sat in a place of prominence. Her gaze swept across the crowd and then paused. There was something familiar about this woman, as though she'd seen her somewhere before.
Then she looked at her son. Her son was always proud and had a swift, long stride—it was often hard for her to keep up when she walked with Ivan.
At that moment, she could clearly see that her son, Ivan, had slowed his pace as if he was waiting for the woman beside him to catch up.
The woman who could actually make her son willingly wait...
So, this was the woman Ivan had fallen for?
With her striking beauty and exceptional grace, she seemed more fitting to stand by Ivan's side than Emily.
She wondered which prominent family's daughter she was.
