Chapter 391
Haley smoothed down her hair before answering the video call.
"Hey, Haley, why's your hair such a mess? Please don't tell me you just woke up..." Thomas's carefree voice came through the phone.
Lying on the hospital bed, Ivan furrowed his brows as he heard a voice that sounded oddly familiar. He couldn't help but wonder where had he heard it before.
Haley stood near the door and said indifferently, "Unlike some people who sleep in, I took two kids to the hospital to visit someone today. Speak your piece, or I'm hanging up."
"Hey, hey, don't hang up! Let me get a glimpse of Angela; it's been so long since I've seen my goddaughter."
Haley's lips twitched slightly in amusement. She had never officially agreed to Thomas being Angela's godfather, but the man insisted on calling her his goddaughter, and she couldn't be bothered to correct him anymore. She gestured for Angela to come closer.
Angela's face lit up with a wide grin, beaming at the phone. "Wow, Angela, your smile is so pretty. I reall miss you. Can you wait for me? I'll come down to Cuenca to see you soon..."
Angela's lips parted in surprise. "Thomas, I've missed you too."
Thomas froze mid-video call, then let out a piercing scream akin to a startled groundhog.
"Holy smokes! Angela, you can talk now?! Oh my goodness! When did you learn to speak? You can actually call out Thomas! Quick, say it again; your voice is so beautiful, ah!"
Haley reached over to take the phone. "Can you chill out a bit?"
"How can I chill? I just can't! Haley, once I wrap things up here, I'm flying straight to Cuenca to see you guys..." Thomas rambled on through the phone.
Meanwhile, Ivan's expression darkened like a thundercloud. Memories of Thomas flooded his mind – the man who had spent time at Haley's place. Ivan couldn't help but feel a surge of anger; how dare Thomas have the audacity to show interest in his woman, as if he were tired of living?
Todd stood by the hospital bed, casting a casual glance at Ivan before making a remark. "During our time abroad, Thomas played a significant role in ensuring that Haley took excellent care of Angela and me," Todd said. "He's quite witty. I believe Owen would appreciate his company as well."
Upon hearing this, Ivan's face grew even gloomier. Yet, frustratingly, he couldn't refute it. If he had known earlier that Haley had given birth to his child, he wouldn't have neglected them these past four years.
Haley ended the call and glanced at her watch. "It's getting late," she remarked. "I should take the kids to preschool."
The mention of Haley leaving left Ivan with an oddly hollow feeling. Despite her presence for quite some time, he hadn't had the opportunity to speak to her alone.
Pressing his lips together, Ivan addressed Keith, "Take your sister out to play. I need to have a private conversation with Mommy."
Owen, holding Angela's hand, dashed out of the hospital room, followed by Todd and Keith, who were a step behind.
Haley stood a few paces away from the bed, her tone indifferent. "What do you want to talk about?"
"You don't need to be so guarded around me," Ivan said softly. "Sit down. Let's talk things over slowly."
Haley's expression remained neutral. "I have ten minutes at most."
Despite needing to drop the kids off at preschool and attend to various matters at the office, Haley couldn't ignore the pressing issues that needed to be addressed. Time was of the essence, and she couldn't afford to waste any more of it.
