Chapter 574
A strange scent wafted under Haley's nose.
Haley abruptly pushed herself away.
She rolled to the right side of the bed and switched on the light.
Ivan covered his face the moment the light came on.
Haley furrowed her brows, her sharp gaze sweeping over him. She felt that Ivan was strangely unfamiliar when he shielded his face.
It was as if the old Ivan had suddenly vanished.
"My eyes were burned by fire today. Please turn off the light." Ivan blocked half his face, his voice hoarse.
Haley crawled over from the corner of the bed, pursing her lips. "Let me take a look. If it's serious, you'll need some medication."
She raised her hand and forcefully separated Ivan's fingers one by one.
What appeared before her was a very familiar face: Ivan's habitually furrowed brows, his high nose bridge, and his lips that had kissed hers.
"Haley, why are you looking at me like that?" Ivan stared at her, his voice hoarse.
Haley suppressed the strange thoughts in her mind and said, " I called you many times when you went to the church to put out the fire today. Why didn't you answer or reply to my messages?"
Ivan smirked and said, "I left my phone at the scene. Someone will bring me a new phone tomorrow."
His smirk made Haley feel that he was unfamiliar once again.
Haley pulled the blanket over herself and said, "It's four in the morning, and I need to sleep. I have to visit the elders tomorrow."
She turned off the light, burying her head in the blanket.
On the other side of the bed, Ivan's expression instantly turned gloomy, resembling a demon crawling out of hell.
Ivan raised his arm and patted the blanket twice. "You go to sleep. I'll take a shower."
He entered the bathroom, closed the door behind him, and lit a cigarette with a lighter.
Ivan never smoked, which meant that from now on, if Martin wanted to take Ivan's place, he would have smoke in secret.
Martin looked at the familiar yet unfamiliar face in the mirror, his lips slowly curling into a gloomy smile.
"Ivan, I said I would take back everything that belonged to me." Martin stared at the mirror, talking to himself. "And you should experience the life I lived for over twenty years. It's up to you whether you end up alive or dead. From today, I am Ivan."
Martin extinguished the cigarette butt and flushed it down the toilet.
That night, Haley slept very restlessly. When she woke up in the morning, she glanced habitually at the pillow and found that the blanket hadn't been moved, meaning Ivan hadn't even slept in bed last night.
Haley rubbed her hair, got up to freshen up, then went to the next room to check on the children. Surprisingly, all four children were still asleep.
Alfred respectfully said, "Good morning, Haley. I just had the family doctor check on the children. They drank excessively, so they’ll be in a deep sleep for at least twenty-four hours. You don't need to worry."
Haley pursed her lips, feeling helpless.
She had no idea what Brenda was thinking, allowing four-year-old children to drink as much as they wanted.
Haley kissed each of the children on the face and went downstairs.
According to Watertown custom, on the first day of marriage, the bride and groom needed to visit the elders.
Brenda was already sitting in the downstairs living room, but Haley didn't see Ivan anywhere.
"Ivan received a call from the company early this morning and went to a meeting," Alfred explained as he handed Haley a cup of coffee. "Please have this."
Brenda took a sip of coffee, then placed a stack of money and a bracelet in Haley's hand.
"Haley, I am so happy that you are now part of my family." Brenda held her hand and said, "Although the Winston family is large and prosperous, our family members are simple people. You shouldn't feel too much pressure now that you’ve become a member of the Winston family,. I hope you can help Ivan continue the prosperity and wealth of the Winston family. Of course, it would be even better if you could give me a few more grandchildren."
