Chapter 699
At night, the streets were quiet, just the streetlights glowing, and there were barely any cars or people around. Even though this was a peaceful country, being near Hinterlands made the border area pretty unstable, with frequent muggings.
Haley stood on the balcony and saw two guys getting their bags snatched. Hinterlands were a mess; no wonder the news always warned tourists to stay away.
Haley stood by the window, lost in thought. She had no idea how much time had passed, but when she turned around, the living room was dead silent. The four kids should've been asleep, but she couldn't catch a wink. Haley had insomnia every night, and the next day, she had to push herself to gather intel.
"Haley, my dad just sent me an invite," Thomas burst in, all excited. "It's the annual business fair in the neighboring country, and the Ellenstein Group got the green light to attend."
Haley turned around. "Congrats, you can finally do something for your dad."
"Haley, do you think I'd be this happy if it was just for my dad?" Thomas said seriously. "I found out the Black Gang will be at the fair too. They're aiming for the reconstruction project in the neighboring town. It's a huge investment, and the Black Gang will definitely send their top people. We can use this chance to get in touch with them."
A spark lit up in Haley's eyes. She'd been down for days after failing to meet Leonardo and was planning her next move. She didn't expect an opportunity to come so soon.
Haley and Thomas whispered about the details for the banquet the next day. Meanwhile, in the study, the four kids weren't asleep. They were sitting on the carpet with a bunch of documents spread out. Todd was flipping through the papers. "This is the list of all Country H personnel's movements. If we look closely, we might find some clues."
Owen was a bit shocked. "This place is tiny, not even half the size of Watertown. Why have so many people come here in a month?"
"Because this place is full of crime. The most profitable and violent industries are here, attracting people from all over the world," Keith explained quietly.
Time ticked by, and Angela flipped through one document after another, unable to find that familiar name.
She choked up, "If Daddy is really here, why doesn't he come to find us?"
"Daddy doesn't know we came here," Owen answered casually.
"Then why doesn't he go back to Watertown?" Angela sniffled. "Does Daddy not want us anymore, so he doesn't even want to go back to Watertown?"
Todd's brow furrowed as he exchanged a glance with Keith.
Although Haley hadn't said it outright, they had already guessed one possibility: Ivan might no longer be alive.
But Haley was so sure that Ivan would come back.
So, they chose to believe Ivan was still alive.
But why hadn't Ivan come to find them in this past month?
Was Ivan unable to help himself, or was he being restricted?
"The military," Keith said slowly. "Everyone in the military here is restricted in their freedom. If Daddy was forcibly conscripted, he might not be able to get away."
