Chapter 978
The banquet hall was buzzing as more guests poured in.
The Jenkins Family members were up and about, greeting everyone.
"Camilla, you're not really one of us, so why don't you just chill on the side?" Nicole said, forcing a smile.
Camilla knew Nicole was just worried she'd steal her thunder.
She shrugged, grabbed a glass of champagne, and headed to the balcony for some fresh air.
She'd barely been there a minute when Micah, Sawyer's son and the eldest of the Jenkins Family, showed up.
Odette had two sons. The eldest, Sawyer Jenkins, ran the Jenkins Group as president. He also had two sons.
Micah Jenkins, the oldest, was twenty-nine and still single, which drove Odette nuts.
Micah clinked his glass with hers and asked, "Camilla, why are you hanging out here alone?"
Camilla smiled. "Aren't you doing the same?"
Micah shook his head. "This party is so dull. It's supposed to be Grandma's birthday bash, but really, it's just a business mixer for the families."
Camilla gave him a look.
Micah was supposed to be the future heir of the Jenkins Group. Why was he slacking off instead of networking?
"Don't give me that look. I'm not into running the company," Micah said with a bitter smile. "If I take over, I'll just be a pawn for the group's alliances. I don't want to lose control over my own life."
Camilla smiled faintly.
There were only three kids of the Jenkins Family who were potential heirs to the Jenkins Group. Micah had no interest in business, his brother Brady was all about partying, and Nicole lacked knowledge in the field.
The Jenkins Group might hang on for a few more decades before fading away.
But that wasn't Camilla's problem.
"Camilla, you'd make a better heir than anyone in the Jenkins Family," Micah said sincerely.
He often saw her at major business forums in Brussville.
Without leaning on the Jenkins Family, she'd built her own company to impressive heights in just three years. Camilla had serious business chops.
"Micah, you shouldn't say that," Camilla said with a faint smile. "I don't get involved in Jenkins Family matters."
She'd eventually leave the Jenkins Family and find her own path. She didn't belong here.
The Jenkins Family had saved her. No matter how much Nicole and Odette tried to push her out, she didn't mind.
Once she repaid her debt, she'd leave Brussville and head to Watertown.
She felt a special connection to Watertown, like she belonged there.
"Camilla, why are you out here?" Samantha walked over from the banquet hall. "I've been looking for you everywhere."
"What do you need Camilla for?" Micah asked with a smile. "I was hoping to pick her brain about business."
Samantha's eyes flickered, and she said to Camilla, "I need to talk to you. Meet me in the banquet hall."
Camilla nodded, turned, and lifted her skirt to head back inside.
"Micah," Samantha said with a gentle smile. "What do you think of Camilla?"
"Camilla's amazing. She's made a name for herself in the Brussville business world all on her own," Micah said sincerely. "I could learn a lot from her."
