Chapter 232
Haley's body felt like it was aflame. Her face, neck, and chest flushed with an abnormal crimson.
Ivan hastily handed her a glass of ice water. "Drink this."
She downed the water in one go, but her throat was still painfully dry. The heat inside of her was growing.
Unconsciously, she tugged at her neckline, revealing a glimpse of her porcelain skin.
Ivan averted his gaze.
With a furrowed brow, he turned and strode out of the private room, kicking open the door of the neighboring cabin, and grabbed Louis by the collar.
"Where's the antidote?"
Louis was startled, trying to keep his composure. "You are the antidote. If you sleep with her, she'll recover..."
"You're despicable!"
Ivan punched him squarely in the face.
Then, grabbing his collar again, he enunciated each word through clenched teeth. "Is there no other way?"
Louis swallowed a breath of cold air. "No, that's... That's it..."
Ivan kicked him aside and stormed out of the cabin.
"You've gone too far this time," Mark said uneasily. “I’ve never seen Ivan this furious.”
Collapsing onto the sofa, Louis lamented, "It's so hard trying to be their wingman. I used to get beat up by Haley, and now it's Ivan... If they end up together, I'll face double trouble..."
He let out a self-deprecating laugh.
Mark rolled his eyes, too exasperated to say another word.
The temperature in the next room relentlessly climbed. Haley felt like a fish stranded on the shore.
She tugged at her collar, seeking the relief of a cool breeze against her skin, a breeze that never came. The room was sealed tight, with not a whiff of fresh air. Gasping for breath, she felt as if she were teetering on the brink of life and death...
Ivan stood by the door, his gaze shadowed and deep. Louis's words had echoed endlessly in his mind. But he couldn't do that.
He recalled one night, five years ago, Louis had plied him with a drink. On that uncontrolled night, everything escalated. He had slept with Emily.
That was his biggest regret. It was the memory he most wanted to escape. In his world, men and women are entangled only through love, not through any substance.
However, it was his fault that Haley was in this situation. He owed it to her to help.
Ivan took a step, slowly making his way to the bedside.
The scent of a man filled the air. It was a familiar scent, like the tang of sea salt laced with potent hormones.
Haley shuddered.
That nightmare of a night five years ago crashed over her. In her daze, she saw the man approaching her. Like a ravenous wolf, he pinned her down. No matter how she fought, she couldn't escape. The man took what he wanted without mercy.
She was only eighteen. Her beautiful dreams for the future were shattered in that one night. Just like that, she was forced to grow up, become strong, and shoulder burdens no one should bear.
