Chapter 410 Unveiling the Past
Haley's heart sank as she mulled over the tangled web of her family history. The undeniable truth loomed heavily in her thoughts: It was indeed true that her mother had fallen pregnant with her before marrying Mr. DeRoss.
As for why Mr. DeRoss agreed to take Haley's mother as his wife, the answer was quite clear: the Martínez family had money. Marrying the only daughter of the wealthy Martínez family meant a bright future ahead.
In fact, that's exactly how things played out. The year after Mr. DeRoss married Haley's mother, the DeRoss Group was established. During the two years that Haley was alive, the DeRoss Group's success skyrocketed.
Even after her mother's untimely demise, the financial foundation she brought into the marriage continued to propel the company to greater success. Haley understood that her mother's existence was intricately tied to the business legacy her mother had inadvertently established.
With a furrowed brow and a tentative voice, Haley asked "Mrs. Martínez, did my mother have any other relationships before she met Mr. DeRoss?"
Mrs. Martínez shook her head. "Your mother was so innocent, she didn't understand romantic love. When she was studying, I strictly forbade her from dating. It was only after graduating from college and meeting Mr. DeRoss that she suddenly fell deeply in love beyond control. Oh, if only I had allowed her to date during her school days, she wouldn't have been so quickly and completely enchanted by Mr. DeRoss..."
Mrs. Martínez sighed heavily, a look of deep regret filling her gaze. It was her excessive love for her daughter, her overprotection, that had ultimately led to her daughter's downfall. If her daughter hadn't married Mr. DeRoss, maybe she wouldn't have met with such a tragic end.
Observing the sorrow in Mrs. Martínez's eyes, Haley tactfully changed the subject. "I just came by to see how you are, Mrs. Martínez. There's nothing else. You should rest well. I'll head back to the office now, and I'll bring Todd and Angela to visit you another day."
Mrs. Martínez waved her off. "Go ahead, don't worry about me."
Haley glanced at the time and drove to the preschool. The whole way there, she kept thinking that, no matter what the truth of the situation was, she needed to get a paternity test done first. She had to confirm that she was not Mr. DeRoss's biological daughter before she could consider any other matters.
But then again, she couldn't help but ponder if she really needed to consider anything else, such as who her biological father was and if it really mattered.
Haley parked her car in front of the preschool with more than ten minutes to spare before dismissal time. She didn't get out of the vehicle and instead sat in the driver's seat, furrowing her brows.
The man from years ago had gotten her mother pregnant but didn't marry her. Eventually, her mother had no choice but to turn to Mr. DeRoss to take responsibility.
It was clear he was a deadbeat with no sense of duty.
Haley dismissed the need for a paternity test, feeling liberated from the burdens of uncertainty.
Just as she settled into this newfound peace, a familiar black car caught her attention, pulling her back into the present. Haley's gaze narrowed, curiosity mingling with apprehension as she awaited the arrival of the unexpected visitor.
