Chapter 349
"Madam, I wish you a happy birthday and eternal youth," Haley said with a smile as she walked up to Mrs. Winston, handing over her birthday present.
A servant took the gift from Haley and placed it on the table in the middle of the dining hall, which was already piled with over a hundred other presents.
Mrs. Winston nodded and said, "Ivan, why don't you introduce us?"
Haley was a bit anxious that Ivan might directly state that they were dating, as she had no immediate intention to make their relationship public.
She preemptively spoke up, "Madam, my name is Haley."
Mrs. Winston frowned. "Haley? That name sounds familiar..."
"How did you get here, sister?" Emily approached with feigned surprise in her voice.
She had been sitting in the restroom, but seeing Ivan escorting Haley over to wish Mrs. Winston a happy birthday had made her eyes red with jealousy.
With Mrs. Winston present, Ivan couldn't very well send her away. So, she made her presence felt again.
Standing beside Mrs. Winston, Emily batted her eyes and said, "Weren't you supposed to be at home with the kids? How do you have the time to attend a party?"
At those words, Mrs. Winston's expression suddenly turned cold.
She had hoped Emily would become the lady of the Winston family and had naturally looked into the DeRoss family's background. She remembered then that Haley was the eldest daughter of the DeRoss family.
That DeRoss heiress was rumored to have a scandalous private life, having children out of wedlock and apparently with two kids already.
Ivan was involved with such a woman.
Mrs. Winston's penetrating gaze swept towards Haley, scrutinizing her like a searchlight.
Haley met Mrs. Winston's gaze with a smile, her composure unwavering, maintaining her grace throughout.
She had never contemplated a future with Ivan, so whatever Mrs. Winston thought of her didn't matter in the slightest.
Guests were gradually filling up the hall.
Haley was undeniably beautiful, and it was hard for her face not to draw attention.
Whenever someone came in, eyes would find their way to her, followed by a rustle of whispers throughout the room.
Haley was known as the most beautiful woman in Cuenca; wherever she went, she was the subject of conversation.
Haley saw Ivan being called away by several business associates and grabbed her wine glass, preparing to go upstairs to check on the children.
However, Emily suddenly approached her and hissed through clenched teeth. "How does it feel? Is it pleasant?"
Pretending to be ignorant, Haley asked, "What feeling?"
"Being talked about, being pointed at, being despised!" Emily sneered. "You entered the Winston family thinking you'd marry into it and become Mrs. Winston? Let me tell you, Mrs. Winston likes only me and wants me to be her daughter-in-law while you're nothing but a stepping stone for me!"
Haley swirled her wine glass and retorted casually, "Then why bother wasting your breath on a mere stepping stone?"
Emily swung a heavy punch, but it was like hitting soft cotton, which nearly caused her to lose her composure.
However, with countless eyes in the banquet hall looking their way, she dared not show her anger and had to suppress the fury within her forcefully.
Haley watched with interest as Emily struggled to maintain her composure. Then, calmly, she said, "Mrs. Winston favors you as a daughter-in-law simply because you've given the Winston family two Owens, no?"
"That's right, that's my confidence!" Emily lifted her chin with pride. "I gave Ivan two sons. No matter what happens, I am their biological mother, and nobody can do anything about that!"
"Emily, I'm really envious of you," Haley said with a sneer at the corner of her lips. "It's been so long since we had a proper chat. How about we grab a coffee after the party?"
