Chapter 246
Haley was squeezed within the crowd of people, with no chance to inch closer.
There were too many people.
There was no way she could meet Garrett, let alone ask for his help with her legal battle.
She watched helplessly as Garrett entered the building without getting a chance to even see his face.
While she was thinking of what to do next, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced at it. It was an unfamiliar number from Xyleria.
She answered the call.
"Ms. Haley DeRoss, I've secured the services of Cuenca's most prominent attorney, Graham Hunter, for my case. From now on, if you have any concerns, please discuss them directly with my lawyer." Jeremy's voice came through the other end. "Oh, and Mr. Hunter mentioned that parents have visitation rights, which means I'm entitled to see my children at any time. I'll pick them up from preschool tomorrow. I just thought I should give you a heads-up."
Haley gripped her phone, her chest heaving with rage.
Jeremy was dead set on fighting for the kids.
No matter what, she had to meet with Garrett.
She scoffed. "Cuenca isn't Xyleria, Mr. Jeremy. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and if anything happens to my kids, I'll call the police. You'll be suspect number one."
"Ms. Haley, why escalate the situation?" Jeremy spoke as if trying to reason with her. "With Mr. Hunter as my lawyer, you stand no chance of winning. That means when this goes to court, the judge will certainly grant me custody of the children. I'll take them back to Xyleria, where they can have a normal life."
"In your dreams!" Haley seethed, her voice heavy with fury.
"There is another option up in the air." Jeremy lowered his voice. "Since you've raised our children alone, it will indeed be cruel for me to strip you of custody simply. If we were together, the children would have a father, and they could grow up in a loving, stable home. Wouldn't that give them a happier childhood?"
Haley almost laughed out of sheer exasperation. "Together? Tell me, how exactly would we be 'together'?"
Thinking she was considering it, Jeremy quickly added, "I'll buy you a house in Cuenca for you and the children. Once I sort things out with my family back home, I'll marry you, and the kids will be a part of the Chase family."
Haley snorted. "Mr. Jeremy, why don't you ask Mr. Hunter how many years one gets for bigamy?"
Jeremy shrugged nonchalantly. "It seems you’ve done your homework on my marital status. You’re right. I'm married, but marriages can end, right? You know how it is with our wealthy circles. Divorces can take years. You'll have to rough it out a little while longer. Once I've got things squared away in Xyleria, I'll make you my wife."
Haley felt sick to her stomach.
She couldn't stand another word and abruptly cut the call off. However, ending the conversation wasn't enough. She went the extra mile by erasing and blocking his number.
The thought of her life being wrecked by that man five years ago filled her with an urge to throttle him. She had to coach herself repeatedly to stay cool and calm down.
She had been standing at the courthouse entrance for ages, surrounded by a multitude of litigants.
As the clock ticked past five, there was no sign of Garrett. While the rest could afford to play the waiting game, Haley had a preschool to run to. She had to pick up her kids.
It seemed like she had had to come up with another plan.
With no other choice, Haley left for the preschool.
In the back seat, Todd sensed his mom's mood was off.
