Chapter 180

His opened his mouth, about to speak, but his phone began to vibrate in his palm, displaying Alfred's name.

The sight of Alfred's name sent a sharp pain through Ivan's heart.

Whenever Alfred reached out, it was always a matter of urgency.

With Owen in surgery and Alfred calling, could it mean…

The typically composed man's fingers trembled, requiring two attempts to tap the answer button.

"Sir, Owen's going to be alright!" Alfred exclaimed, choked with joy, "The surgery's nearly finished and doctors say he should wake up by tonight if all goes well!"

Ivan felt a great relief.

He walked briskly towards the hospital, concurrently asking, "How was the blood resolved?"

He'd made calls, but a resolution couldn't have come this fast.

"Sir, you might not know yet, but Miss DeRoss, Owen's aunt Haley — she's got the negative blood type!" Alfred rushed out his words, "When Owen had his accident, Haley was there, she brought him to the hospital, and she volunteered to donate her blood..."

Ivan paused, his fingers stilling: "Haley donated blood?"

"Yes, it was Haley. She provided the amount just enough to save Owen..."

Ivan pursed his lips slightly: "Is she still at the hospital?"

"Yes, right outside the OR... Owen's surgery just ended, I'll go tend to Owen now..."

After hanging up, Ivan picked up his pace.

As if struck by lightning, Emily stood frozen in place, a statue amongst the chaos. By the time she snapped back to reality, Ivan had already made his way into the hospital.

She darted toward him, her face ashen, "Ivan, who donated blood to Owen?"

"Haley," Ivan replied, glancing at Emily. "She's Rh-negative. Why aren't you?"

Emily was shocked.

Ivan's gaze felt like a scalpel, peeling back her skin to expose her darkest secret.

She took a deep breath, "My grandmother... she was Rh-negative. Owen must've inherited it from her... Ivan, by asking that, are you blaming me? I'm Owen's mother, I wanted to save him too, but I'm not Rh-negative. What could I have possibly done?"

She choked out the words as tears cascaded down her cheeks.

Ivan withdrew his gaze, indifferent, "It's settled now. No need to dwell on it. Owen's surgery just ended. Let's go see him."

Emily wiped away her tears and nodded, following him.

They quickly arrived at the operation room's doors, just in time to see Haley and Alfred wheeling a still unconscious Owen to his hospital room.

Emily suddenly realized something.

Haley had always been sharp!

If Haley found out she might be Owen's mother, with Haley's smarts, she'd surely start to suspect something...

"Ivan," Emily blurted, clutching her stomach, "I guess I was so worried that the pain didn't hit me until now. I need to use the restroom..."

She hurried off, while Ivan didn't even glance her way, striding toward the hospital room's door.

Haley looked up, "Mr. Winston."

Ivan's voice was soft but distant as he observed her pale face, "Donating that much blood in one go isn’t easy for a person. Your body can't take that kind of strain. You shouldn't be walking around; you need to rest."

Haley shook her head gently, "It's fine, I want to stay with Owen for a bit."

She entered the room, sat next to the bed, and held Owen’s hand, exhaustion evident in her features.
