Chapter 114 I Knew You Cared for Me

Mary turned her head, "Grandma, he bullied me again."

Without hesitation, Victoria raised her hand to hit Matthew.

Matthew's face stayed cold and indifferent, his eyes boring into Mary like he wanted to burn a hole through her.

Victoria snapped, "Matthew, if you bully Mary again, I'll make her leave you!"

Matthew closed his eyes, trying to keep his emotions in check.

Mary smirked and turned to Victoria, "Grandma, are you tired? Sleepy?"

Victoria shook her head, "No, I want to play." But she yawned as she said it.

Seeing this, Mary quickly suggested, "How about we go to the room to play? I'll tell you a story."

"Okay." Victoria immediately agreed at the mention of a story.

Mary walked over, pushed Matthew aside, and wheeled Victoria towards the small building.

Matthew stared at her back silently.

"Matthew." Laura walked over, her voice subdued.

Matthew turned to see her eyes red from crying. "What's wrong?"

Laura gave a bitter smile. "It's nothing. I just didn't expect Grandma to mistake me for a maid. She's sick and doesn't remember me. I get that, but what about Mary? Does Mary also see me as a maid of the Montagu family? I knew you first. If you hadn't had that accident, we would have been married by now."

As she spoke, she got more agitated, tears falling again, her pale and fragile appearance evoking sympathy.

Matthew's brows furrowed slightly, "Laura, she doesn't mean that."

Laura looked at him, "How do you know she doesn't mean that? Do you understand her very well and care a lot about her?"

Pausing, she took a step back, "Matthew, you promised me you'd divorce her, but what is this now? If you've fallen in love with her, tell me. I will step back. As for my leg, don't worry about it. I saved you voluntarily, and I never intended to take advantage of it."

Matthew's brows furrowed even tighter, "Laura, don't overthink it. It's not the right time."

Laura choked back tears, "Then when? She's treating me like a maid. Will more people in the future think I'm someone with a shady background?"

Matthew's gaze turned colder, his tone still gentle, "She doesn't and wouldn't dare think that way. Her existence is to protect you."

Laura hesitated for a moment, a hint of doubt on her face, "Really?"

"Yes." Matthew's handsome face remained as calm and aloof as ever, concealing any other emotions, "I've just returned to the Montagu family, and there are many malicious people who covet my position. Keeping your distance from me is for your safety."

A smile broke through Laura's tears, and she threw herself into his arms, "Matthew, I knew it; I knew you cared for me. I misunderstood you; I'm sorry."

Matthew stiffened, almost instinctively pushing her away, "I'll go check on Grandma."

As he turned, he saw Mary standing not far away, gazing at him with clear, cold eyes.

Clapping her hands, Mary remarked, "So touching, so romantic. I can't help but shed tears at the sight. But, Matthew, how disgusting you are! Can your beautiful love story not make me the third wheel? It's really making me sick."
