Chapter 29: He is Taking a Shower
Mary withdrew her gaze and turned to leave the nursing home.
"Matthew, thank you. I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my leg," Laura said, leaning on Matthew's arm, her brows furrowed.
Matthew stared at her prosthetic leg and said in a deep voice, "Do you need a wheelchair?"
Laura shook her head with a smile, "No, I experience such pain every day. It will be fine after bearing it a while. It's just the residual effects from an illness two years ago..."
As she spoke, she suddenly realized what she had said and quickly added, "Matthew, don't get me wrong. I didn't mean anything by it, I..."
"I'll have the driver take you home," Matthew interrupted her, supporting her as they walked outside.
Laura lowered her gaze slightly. She had only pretended to have leg pain and asked Matthew to support her because she saw Mary, but from Mary's perspective, it might seem like Matthew was embracing her. Although it was a misunderstanding, she had to do something to make up for it.She had to let Mary know that she and Matthew were the ones meant to be together! Laura lingered because she craved Matthew's warmth.
At that moment, Matthew's phone rang. He checked it, and his expression darkened a bit."Hello?"
Mary said, "I'm waiting for you at the courthouse. Please come as soon as possible."
After speaking, she hung up immediately. Her tone was particularly cold.
Matthew pursed his lips into a straight line and put away his phone.
Seeing that it was Mary calling, Laura's eyes flickered, and she suddenly made a muffled sound.
"What's wrong?" Matthew asked.
Laura's expression quickly turned sour, "I... my leg suddenly hurts, Matthew. Why is my leg hurting so much?"
She grabbed Matthew's arm, tears streaming down her face. Seeing this, Matthew lifted her up and quickly walked outside, "I'll take you to the hospital."
Laura sobbed softly but still looked understanding, "Matthew, do you have work to do? If you do, go ahead. I can manage on my own."
"It's fine."Matthew said and started the car, speeding towards the hospital.
Watching Matthew's handsome and stern profile, Laura's heart couldn't help but race. He still had her in his heart.
Mary waited at the courthouse entrance until the staff had left, but Matthew hadn't showed up yet. She was annoyed with the thoughts, 'What was Matthew's deal? She had agreed to the divorce, so why wasn't he coming?'
Dusk enveloped the earth, and Mary stared at the sunset for a while before taking out her phone to call Matthew again."Hello?"
But this time, it wasn't Matthew who answered. It was Laura. Mary's words froze on her lips.
"Ms. Smith, are you looking for Matthew? He's in the shower. What did you want to say? I'll pass on the message to him later," said Laura on the end as if she had just gone through something.
Mary felt like her throat was being tightly squeezed, making it difficult for her to breathe. She hung up without saying a word.
'They... them!'muttered Mary, tremblingwith anger, but more than anything, she felt deeply hurt! They hadn't even divorced yet. How could Matthew treat her like this? Was he in such a rush?
Her eyes stung, and Mary blinked. Just then, her phone rang. She thought it was Matthew and was ready to curse him out, but when she looked, it was Shirley. She took a deep breath and answered, "Hello? Shirley."
