Chapter 116 I Can Live Without You

Matthew was floored.

He reached out to wipe the tears from Mary's face, but she pulled away.

Mary wiped her face roughly. "Don't touch me."

Matthew's throat tightened as he stared at her. "Mary, you..." He wanted to say something, but the words wouldn't come. He just kept staring.

A dull ache settled in Matthew's chest as he saw the hurt in her eyes, leaving him confused and panicked.

Mary sniffled. "Matthew, let's get a divorce, okay? You've got all these capable people around you; you can protect Laura. I want a peaceful life. I can live without you."

Matthew's lips pressed into a thin line. What would his life be like without her?

Suddenly, memories of the past year with her flashed through his mind.

She seemed innocent. But was she really?

Why didn't she agree to divorce when she found out who he really was?

The turmoil in Matthew's eyes faded. He straightened up, closed the passenger door, and let the cold wind clear his thoughts. His face returned to its usual cool demeanor.

He opened the driver's door and started the engine, his voice low and calm. "You've already collected the money for the month. Let's get through this month first."

Mary turned to him. "I'll pay you back now, and then we can get a divorce."

She pulled out her phone to make the transfer, only to realize she didn't have five million dollars now!

She had spent a lot on clothes for Robert, and that outfit was pricey!

Mary didn't know what to say for the moment.

Matthew glanced at her.

Mary sniffled. "Next month it is, then."

Matthew inexplicably felt relieved.

The car fell silent. After a while, he asked, "Where do you want to go?"

In a muffled voice, Mary said, "Maple Grove Manor."

Matthew didn't say anything more and drove towards Maple Grove Manor.

They soon arrived at the community's entrance, but Matthew didn't drive in. He stopped and didn't look at Mary; he just took out a cigarette and lit it.

Mary glanced at him, furrowing her brows, wanting to say something, but held back.

She got out of the car and walked inside.

Matthew's gaze followed her. The pale blue smoke enveloped his face, hiding his thoughts.

At that moment, his phone rang. It was Herman.

"Hello?" Matthew answered.

Herman's voice was cheerful. "Matthew, I'm back. Aren't you coming to greet me? What about a grand party?"

Matthew's tone was cool. "Perfect timing."

Herman asked, "What do you mean?"

"You'll see." Matthew hung up.

Night fell.

Mary returned home and slept, feeling that if she didn't sleep, she would drive herself crazy.

When she woke up, it was already 8 P.M. Mary picked up her phone to order takeout but couldn't decide what to eat. Instead, she decided to cook something herself.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Mary hesitated—who could it be this late?

Thinking back to her recent experiences, Mary picked up a baseball bat, cautiously walked to the door, and peeked through the peephole.
