Chapter 404 Suppressed Anger
Shirley saw what was happening and gasped, her face going pale.
Herman stood off to the side, sneering, "Is that all the guts you've got?"
Matthew quickly covered Mary's eyes, pressing his chest against her back. "Don't look," he said in a low voice.
But Mary pushed his hand away, gave the three of them a calm look, and then turned to Shirley. "You okay?"
Shirley nodded. "I'm fine, I can still walk."
Mary didn't say anything more.
She helped Shirley up. "You should go first. With them here, they won't let these people get away."
Shirley stammered, "Okay... okay."
She was shaking as she spoke.
Mary helped Shirley leave, and Matthew watched them go.
Herman smirked, "Didn't think Mary had it in her."
Matthew replied, "If she were scared, I wouldn't be here."
How could a scared person pick up a guy off the street and take him home?
Herman got the hint and chuckled, "She did you a solid. Ever thought about making it work with her?"
Matthew said, "I'm thinking about it."
But it seemed like he was going about it all wrong.
Mary really hated how things were between them and always talked about divorce.
But she was the one he chose; he couldn't let her go.
Herman said, "Take your time. What about these guys?"
Matthew said, "Send them to the cops."
Herman shook his head. "That's going easy on them.. Leave it to me."
Matthew glanced at him. "You mad?"
Herman said, "Aren't you?"
Matthew shrugged. "Not really."
Herman went quiet.
Matthew turned and left, leaving the guys to Herman.
Herman picked up a barbed whip, weighed it in his hand, and lashed out at someone.
The guy screamed, another bloody mark on his body!
Herman had been holding in a lot of anger, and now he was letting it out. His face stayed indifferent, but thinking of Shirley curled up in the car, he lashed out again.
Shirley was his lifesaver, and they dared to hurt her. They were asking for it!
The screams were muffled by the heavy iron door.
Coming out of the basement, Shirley took a deep breath of fresh air. "Finally, I feel better."
Mary smiled helplessly. "You're so scared, how could you kill them?"
Shirley sighed, "I didn't think I'd be so useless."
She hugged Mary tightly. "Mary, I was really scared."
Mary felt bad. "I'm sorry, Shirley, I dragged you into this." Even though she didn't know who was behind it, she knew they were after her.
Shirley said, "Don't be silly. If someone wants to target us, they'd come after us no matter what. It's not your fault, it's theirs."
Shirley sighed and continued, "Looks like you can't get a divorce right now. We need Matthew to find out who's behind this."
Mary didn't say anything, but it was true.
Matthew walked over, his eyes on Mary. "Ready to go back?"
The sky was getting dark, the surroundings dim, and Mary couldn't quite see his expression.
