Chapter 146 You Are in for a Rough Ride
Mary glared at Herman. "Would you dare say that to him when he's sober?"
Herman went quiet.
He stared at Mary for a bit, then turned to the half-conscious Matthew. "Matthew, you're in for a rough ride."
Mary didn't flinch. "Go back where you came from. You're not welcome here." She dropped the baseball bat and shut the door.
Herman sighed, helped Matthew up, and left.
"Mary," Matthew mumbled, clearly drunk.
Herman sneered. "Your Mary doesn't want you. Keep dreaming."
Mary went back to her room and shut her eyes, but she couldn't sleep. She stared at the ceiling, confused.
Why was Matthew drinking again? Wasn't he supposed to be with Laura?
Maybe Laura's depression was getting to him, making him drink to cope.
How emotional!
Mary, expressionless, thought for a bit and then tried to sleep.
In the following days, she didn't see Matthew at all. Mary focused on her almost-finished project with the Henry Group.
Once it was finished, she could quit. This time, Matthew had no reason to keep her around.
Mary ordered a coffee, sat at her desk, and started drinking. There was half an hour left before clocking out; she was thinking about dinner.
Then her phone rang. It was Shirley. "Hey, Shirley."
Shirley was sobbing. "Mary, I'm in trouble."
Mary's face turned serious. "What happened?"
Shirley said, "I got into a fight, and now I'm in the hospital. The other person might want compensation."
Mary checked the time, stood up, and said, "Don't worry, I'll be right there. Which hospital?"
Shirley gave the name. Mary informed her manager before heading out.
At the hospital, Mary saw Shirley at the ward door, looking miserable.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Mary walked up.
Shirley shook her head. "I'm fine."
"Good."Mary sighed in relief.
Shirley said, "But I fractured the guy's skull. The doctor says he has a concussion and has been kept for observation."
Mary paused. "What happened? How did it get this bad?"
Shirley sighed. "I was out in a karaoke with colleagues, had too much to drink, and saw a guy trying to force himself on a girl in the restroom. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and hit him on the head."
Mary fell silent. "Is he inside?" she asked.
"Yeah," Shirley said, looking scared. "Mary, I'm not afraid of compensation, but what if I really hurt him badly?"
Mary reassured her. "It's okay. Let's check him out first."
"Okay." Shirley pushed open the door to the ward.
When Mary saw the person on the bed, she froze. "It's you?"
