Chapter 147 Mr. Adams, How Nice of You
Herman lay on the hospital bed, his head wrapped in bandages. Despite his handsome face showing signs of illness, his eyes burned with anger as he looked at Shirley.
Shirley instinctively moved behind Mary.
In the room, besides Herman, Matthew sat on a nearby chair, radiating a cold, noble aura.
The moment Mary walked in, Matthew's gaze locked onto her.
Mary, ignoring him, turned to Herman and said, "Mr. Adams, my friend didn't mean any harm. She'll cover all the hospital costs and compensate you. What do you think?"
Herman sneered, "I think I'd like to smash a fire extinguisher over her head."
Mary frowned, "Violence isn't the answer."
Herman's eyes flicked to Shirley hiding behind Mary and then to Matthew. He suddenly said, "As for compensation, I don't want money, but I do need a caregiver."
Shirley offered, "I'll hire the best caregiver for you."
Herman shook his head, "I don't want those for hire."
Shirley asked, "Then what do you want?"
Herman replied, "You. You hit me, you feel guilty, so you'll take care of me. When I'm better, we're even."
"Impossible!" Shirley's eyes widened. "I have a job. I can't take care of you. Pick something else."
Herman said, "Ms. Hill, I'm the one making demands here, not you."
Shirley bit her lip.
Mary was silent for a moment before asking, "Is this really necessary?"
Herman nodded, "Yes. Otherwise, I'll report her. Even if she doesn't go to jail, she'll be detained."
Mary glared at him. Herman was just like Matthew—ruthless.
Shirley snapped, "How shameless can you be? I didn't mean to hit you. If you hadn't acted weird, this wouldn't have happened. It's your fault."
Herman closed his eyes, "Fine, the deal's off. Matthew, call the police and my lawyer."
Shirley's face fell.
Mary took a deep breath and asked Shirley, "How long can you take off work?"
Shirley thought for a moment, "Two weeks, max."
Mary turned to Herman, "She'll take care of you for two weeks. By then, you should be mostly recovered. Deal?"
Herman kept his eyes closed, silent, and the room was tense.
Just as Shirley was about to lose it, Matthew said, "Alright, two weeks. Any longer, and your girlfriends might get jealous."
Herman opened his eyes, "Mary, I'm agreeing because of Matthew. If it weren't for him, your friend would be in jail."
Mary's face remained impassive.
Shirley gritted her teeth, wanting to argue, but Mary cut her off, "It's just two weeks. Take care of him, and don't do anything rash."
"Mary," Shirley hesitated.
Mary smiled, "Mr. Adams is good-looking, comes from a good family, and has good character. He won't hold a grudge but wants simple compensation."
She turned to Herman, "Mr. Adams, how nice of you!"
