Chapter 141 No One Was There

Matthew turned his head slightly, and the kiss meant for the corner of his mouth landed right on his lips.

Mary jerked back, her face turning red.

Matthew smirked. "Is that all you got?"

"Don't push it, Matthew," Mary snapped.

He chuckled. "Trying to please me now, Mary? You sure you wanna talk to me like that?"

Mary's eyes went cold. He always dangled the divorce over her head but never followed through. What was his deal?

Matthew watched her, confident she'd cave, while Mary scoffed and looked away, ignoring him.

Matthew paused, staring at her for a moment before starting the car and driving off.

The car ride was tense, thick with unspoken words.

Mary rolled down the window, but Matthew rolled it right back up. She tried again, keeping a straight face, and he locked it this time.

Mary was speechless. Why was he being so childish?

Back at Maple Grove Manor, Mary tried to open the door but found it locked.

"Matthew, what are you doing?" she asked, trying to stay calm. He stayed silent, fiddling with a cigarette, eyes closed.

Mary glared at him, wanting to punch him.

As the sun set and darkness crept in, the car's interior dimmed.

Mary knew staying in the car wasn't an option. That jerk wanted her to beg.

She grabbed his hand, her voice softening. "Matthew, can we go inside? I'm hungry. Let's have dinner."

"Us?" Matthew opened his eyes, his expression unreadable in the dim light.

"Yeah, it's late. You helped me today, so dinner's on me," Mary said sincerely.

Matthew's tense face relaxed a bit, and he unlocked the car. Mary let go of his hand, jumped out, and headed for the apartment building.

Matthew frowned, watching her walk away. He thought, 'What a little trickster.'

Just as he was about to get out, his phone rang. It was Laura. "Hello, Laura."

But a different woman's voice came through. "Matthew, get to the hospital now! Laura tried to commit suicide!"

Matthew's face went rigid. "I'm on my way," he said, slamming the car door shut.

Mary got in the elevator, expecting Matthew to follow. When he didn't, she figured he was parking the car and went upstairs.

At her door, she covered the keypad to enter her new code, then turned around. "You..."

No one was there.

What took him so long? Mary shrugged it off and went inside.
