Chapter 369 The Bet Doesn't Count

Mary walked through the door and her phone rang. It was Shirley.

"Hey Mary, I'm heading back soon. Want me to bring you anything? The food here is pretty awesome," Shirley's voice was all bubbly.

Mary had been stressing about Shirley's injury, but hearing her so chipper now, she felt a wave of relief.

"You decide, I'm good with anything." Mary replied with a grin.

"Got it, I'll find something you'll love," Shirley said.

"Cool," Mary said, grabbing a glass of water and plopping down on the couch. She put the call on speaker. "So, is your injury all healed up?"

"Totally! And I've had my fill of fun. I need to get back to you before some other woman swoops in," Shirley joked.

Mary laughed. "No chance, you're my one and only."

"Really? Should I tell Matthew that? Think he'd freak out?" Shirley teased.

"He wouldn't dare," Mary shot back.

"You sound like you've got him wrapped around your finger. So, what’s been going on while I was away?" Shirley asked.

Mary's smile faded a bit. "Not much. And there's no control. We're getting a divorce soon."

"Seriously?" Shirley's voice shot up. "He agreed to it?"

"I made a bet with him. If I win, we get divorced," Mary explained.

"Mary, aren't you scared you might lose?" Shirley asked.

"Nope," Mary said confidently. She trusted Mark completely.

"But it can't be that simple. How did Matthew agree to this bet so easily? Are you sure he doesn't have a trick up his sleeve?" Shirley's words made Mary pause.

Mary's mind raced. 'What if Matthew's got Mark's wife as leverage? That's totally something he'd do!'

"Mary?" Shirley called out, confused by the silence.

"You've got a point. I need to call him," Mary said.

"Mary, the bet's already on. What good will calling him do now?" Shirley sighed.

Mary had nothing, and Matthew could easily play her.

Shirley couldn't help but worry that Mary's divorce plan might flop.

"I still need to ask," Mary insisted.

"Alright, go ahead," Shirley said.

"Okay," Mary said, then hung up and dialed Matthew's number.

"Hello?" Matthew sounded surprisingly upbeat.

"Matthew, keep our bet between us. Don't drag anyone else into it." Mary said bluntly.

Matthew's cheeriness vanished. He scoffed, "Mary, you chose to play this game. Now you want to change the rules? That's not how it works."

His evasive answer made her even more suspicious. Was he really using Mark's wife as a pawn?

Mary's voice turned icy. "Matthew, this bet is between the three of us. If you’re using Mark's wife to force him out of Lindwood City, the deal's off!"
