Chapter 87 I Don't Trust You

Mary's smile carried a hint of bitterness. "Matthew, we've been together for a year. Even if you've regained your memory now, shouldn't the memories from the past year still be there? How could you not believe me?"

Mary couldn't figure out how he could look at her with that kind of skeptical gaze.

Matthew's heart seemed to skip a beat, then he said, "Have you called the police?"

Mary's tone turned colder. "Yes."

Matthew's brow remained furrowed, and after a while, he said, "I will investigate."

Looking at him, Mary asked, "So, you still refuse to divorce me?"

Matthew remained silent.

Mary continued, "Is Laura's life valuable, but mine isn't?"

Matthew pressed his thin lips into a straight line, staring at her for a while before saying, "Your life is valuable too."

"Why then won't you divorce me?" Mary asked.

Matthew thought, 'She kept talking divorce! Was that all she had to say?'

He felt inexplicably irritated and frustrated. His hand on her waist unconsciously tightened a bit.

Mary's body tensed. "Are you going to strangle me?"

Matthew looked at her calmly. "Don't you think I want to?"

"I'm really unlucky to have met a douchebag like you," Mary muttered.

Matthew had yet to respond.

Mary stopped struggling and said, "If you won't divorce, that's fine. Since you're using me as a shield, I can't do it for free. Five million dollars a month. I value my life and love money. You have to give me something. If not, I might go crazy and expose our relationship, then release the videos. In the end, you and Laura will be the ones to be criticized."

After a pause, she added, "I suppose you wouldn't want Laura to face public criticism, right?"

Matthew responded, "You really dare to ask for that."

Mary retorted, "So why don't you divorce me? If you don't pay, I'll go to your house. It seems like your family doesn't really like me, so they might pay me to give."

Matthew's brow furrowed. "Is money all you want?"

Mary shrugged. "I grew up in an orphanage and dreamed of becoming rich and living a good life."

Looking at his cute face, she suddenly chuckled. "They say I'm lucky to have married the richest man in Lindwood City, but I'm also unlucky because that richest man is a douchebag."

Matthew remained silent.

Sensing the suppressed tension emanating from him, Mary blinked and asked, "So, do you agree with the money?"

Matthew suddenly smiled, "Sure."

Mary's eyes lit up. "Really?"

Matthew said, "If we're not divorcing, we need to act like real couples. You can either stay with me at the Montagu Mansion or I can stay with you at the Maple Grove Manor. Your choice. We need to show others that we have a great marriage."

Mary questioned, "Many couples live separately. Why do we have to live together?"

Matthew explained, "To convince others and prevent anyone from bothering Laura."

Mary felt like she shouldn't even ask that question.

Wasn't she trying to make herself miserable?

"Then arrange some bodyguards for me, for my safety," Mary continued to negotiate.

Since no one cared for her, She had to do it for herself.

Matthew replied, "You'll accompany me to and from work, and I'll ensure your safety."

"I don't trust you," Mary retorted.

The atmosphere in the private room grew even colder, the tension solidifying, an invisible pressure gradually spreading.
