Chapter 16: Happy Divorce

Matthew's breath deepened. His eyes were fixed on her, filled with unreadable emotions.

Mary turned around, holding her heels, and walked forward step by step.

"Get in the car."Behind her, Matthew's low, magnetic voice sounded again.

A trace of bitterness flashed in Mary's eyes. "You still want the divorce, would you?"In that case, he would let Laura down, who had a prosthetic leg installed because of him.

"This is the Montagu's territory. If someone sees you limping out here, it will a shame for Montagu."Matthew said coldly.

Mary's long eyelashes trembled. She felt a bit ridiculous for thinking that Matthew might not want a divorce.

"Mary, as you said, there is no offense between us," Matthew said  exactly what she had said before.

Mary's fingers tightened for a moment, then she turned around and got into the car. When she came back, Matthew felt his heart suddenly relax for something unknown.

He put himself together and got into the driver's seat. Through the rearview mirror, Matthew saw that Mary was sitting in the back silently as if she had lost it all.

"Get in here."He said in a low voice.

Mary looked at him and said, "Matthew, could you please have a bit of a conscience? My foot hurts!"

Knowing her foot was blistered, he still made her go back and forth!

Matthew rested one hand on the steering wheel with his long, attractive fingers casually placed. He neither spoke nor started the engine. The atmosphere was tense.

'Jerk!' Mary cursed inwardly, then opened the door and got into the passenger seat. Only then did Matthew start the engine and drive. They didn't speak again until they reached the entrance of Maple Estates when Mary said, "At 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, let's submit the divorce paper together."

After saying this, she got out of the car without a glance at Matthew's face. She walked so fast as if something vicious was chasing after her.

With his thin lips pressed into a straight line, Matthew didn't look away until Mary's figure disappeared. He found a pack of cigarettes in the car, took one out, and lit it. Pale blue smoke filled the car, making Matthew's face even colder and somber.

Mary treated the wound on her foot first when she got home. Then she found their marriage certificate. She looked at the marriage certificate with sadness, her eyes stinging. When they got the certificate, she thought she would be with Matthew forever.  Being with Matthew made her very happy since she had been alone as a child.

Her tears suddenly fell directly on the certificate, which blurred her vision. She was so sad. She liked Matthew so much indeed. But how could he leave her as soon as he regained his memory?

When Matthew first learned sign language, he clumsily expressed to Mary that he would always be by her side.

'Liar.Big liar!' Thinking of this, Mary hugged the marriage certificate, curling up on the sofa, with her eyes red and hollow. This small house was filled with their sweet and happy memories, which hurt every time Mary thought about it. Never mind. She didn't want them anymore. She had tasted enough of the pain of a broken heart in these past few days. She would pretend that Matthew had never appeared in her life. She would be alone again, with no one to rely on.

 'Mary. Happy divorce to yourself.'
