Chapter 28 Regret is a Painful Thing

Matthew frowned, hung up the phone abruptly, and walked out.

In the garden, Laura had already approached Victoria. She held the candy floss in her hand and offered it to Victoria, "Grandma, isn't this kitten cute?"

Victoria's eyes lit up at the sight of the candy floss, but instead of reaching for it, she tugged at Mary's hand."Mary, buy me candy floss. I don't like kittens. I like bunnies."

When Laura appeared, Mary couldn't help but feel tense. However, when Victoria's voice came, a sudden sense of relief washed over her. A feeling of sadness and almost tears crept in.

"Alright, I'll buy it for you," Victoria smiled, "Mary is the best."

Laura stood there stiffly with the candy floss in hand. She slowly withdrew her hand and looked at Mary, "Grandma really likes you."

Mary replied calmly, "I just happened to have her favor."

Laura smiled faintly and lowered her eyes, a hint of displeasure flickering in them, thinking, 'What did Mary mean by that? Was she implying that she couldn't win Victoria's favor?'

"Grandma." At that moment, Matthew walked over, "Are you tired? Shall we take a rest?"

Victoria held Mary's hand, "Mary, stay with me."

Mary said, "Okay." She helped Victoria turn towards the small building and started walking.

After a few steps, seeing Matthew not following, Victoria immediately waved at him, "Matthew, come over!"

Mary couldn't help but want to laugh. Matthew walked over and supported her, "Let's go, grandma."

Victoria was happy, "Matthew, you must treat Mary well, or she will run away, and you'll regret it too late!"

She leaned closer to Matthew, saying, "Let me tell you, regret is a painful thing. You should have regreted  it!"

Victoria was like a child. Why would he regret it?

Matthew just listened, not saying a word. Mary glanced at Matthew, her eyes slightly shimmering, deep in thoughts. 'Regret? How could that be? He wouldn't regret it. They were already at the courthouse. If it weren't for Victoria's fuss, they would have filed for divorce by now.'

A pang of bitterness struck Mary's heart. She forced herself not to dwell on it.

Laura stood behind, watching the figures of the three as if they were a harmonious family while she was but an outsider. Her other hand suddenly grabbed the candy floss. The fluffy candy floss instantly deformed under pressure, and she kneaded it into a ball and threw it in the trashbin.

Mary and Matthew helped Victoria back to the room. Matthew's phone rang, and he looked at Mary, "Please take care of grandma."Then he turned and left with his phone.

"What's he doing?"Victoria asked in confusion.

Mary said, "Matthew is very busy with work. He went to handle some work-related matters."

"Oh." Victoria seemed indifferent to Matthew.

Mary took out a storybook and read it to Victoria. About ten minutes later, Victoria fell asleep. Mary covered her with a blanket and quietly left the room.

When she reached the garden, Mary saw Matthew and Laura standing together, the sunlight shining on them. Matthew had his back to Mary, and Laura was looking up at him with loving eyes. Mary intended to avert her gaze, but the next moment, she saw Matthew reaching out to embrace Laura. Her breath caught as if a knife had pierced her heart, causing her body to sway slightly.
