Chapter 23: Mary, My Wound Hurts
Shirley, "I'm just so angry."
Mary said in faint voice, "We both have to suffer for the cost of your anger."
Shirley choked, a hint of guilt appearing on her delicate face, "It's my fault."
"Alright, tacos? It is your treat," Mary said.
"No problem!"Shirley readily agreed, linking arms with Mary as they walked down the street.
By the time they finished dinner, it was already dark. Mary turned Shirley down, who wanted to go home with Mary as a company.
"You've been taking care of me in the hospital for so long. Now go home and take a rest, or you won't be pretty anymore," Mary said.
Shirley panicked, "Are you serious? I'm not pretty anymore? That's not cool; I need to go back and have a session of skincare. See you, Mary."
Watching Shirley leave, Mary's smile held a bit of helplessness.
She headed straight back to Maple Estates. The light on her floor had been somehow broken, casting the hallway in darkness. She took out her key to the door, and just as she was about to close it, a strong force stopped her.
"Who is it?"Mary exclaimed as she turned around to see Matthew's handsome face. She didn't expect he had been hiding somewhere, seemingly waiting for a long time, as a bit of chill had clung to him.
Mary pushed him, "Get out. You are not welcome to my house."
She still remembered the embarrassment Matthew had caused her today. What was his point of coming over now?
Matthew, however, grabbed her wrist, saying in lowvoice, "Ranch-style house, thirty million dollars, don't you want it?"
Mary paused, "You can just have someone send the deed and the check over instead of yourself."
Matthew tightened his grip on her wrist.
Mary inhaled, "What's this nonsense?"
Matthew stepped inside and closed the door behind him. The lights came on, brightening the room.
Mary pursed her lips, looking at him, pulling her hand away, a hint of sarcasm in her clear eyes, "What? Was my apology today not sincere enough? How about I apologize again? What kind of apology do you want?"
"Mary,"Matthew interrupted her, "Why do you have to mock at me this way?"
Mary was almost amused out of anger. "What are you talking about? Weren't you the one pushing me first?"
As soon as she questioned him, Mary's eyes turned red.
She immediately turned her head, taking a deep breath, "Matthew, what happened today made me feel like I did something wrong to you, but it was you who did anything wrong and who should apologize!"
Her voice trembled a bit. Mary tried so hard to control herself. It was easy when Matthew wasn't around, but as soon as he appeared, things were different. How could Matthew treat her like that? Neither she nor Shirley had done anything wrong. It was all because they had threatened Laura's safety.
Mary gave a bitter smile, "We are done. Bring the deed and the check, and we'll file for divorce immediately."
She didn't want to maintain this marriage any longer.
Matthew looked deeply at Mary, his thin lips pressed into a straight line, a layer of gloom surrounding him. He headed to the sofa and sat down.
"Mary, my wound hurts."He said in a hoarse voice.
Mary was really about to laugh from anger. "Matthew, what nonsense are you talking about?"
After what she said, how could he still tell her his wound hurts with a poker face?
