Chapter 77 Why Aren't you Answering his Calls?
"Mr. Williams, what are you doing here?" Mary asked, her voice tinged with a slight tremor.
She was truly terrified.
Just a moment ago, she had almost been dragged into the woods. She didn't dare to think about what would have happened then.
Robert replied, "I was passing by, making a call on the roadside, and heard some commotion here, so I came to check it out. I didn't expect it to be you."
He took out his phone, "I'm calling the police now."
Mary nodded, "Okay."
However, when she turned her head again, the person who attacked her had disappeared!
"Where did he go?"
Mary was startled, her face turning a little paler.
Robert narrowed his eyes. "He can't escape."
When they received the call, the police officers arrived quickly. Mary recounted her ordeal and then went to the police station to make a statement. The police began reviewing the surveillance footage and extracting skin particles from under Mary's fingernails.
After everything was sorted out, it was almost dawn.
Coming out of the police station, Mary turned to Robert and said, "Mr. Williams, thank you so much today."
Robert smiled, his short silver hair seeming to shimmer under the light, his handsome face exuding a hint of charm, "Don't mention it."
However, Mary couldn't shake off the feeling of indebtedness; this favor couldn't be repaid with just a simple thank you.
Glancing at the time, she suggested, "It's breakfast time. Why don't I treat you to a meal?"
Raising an eyebrow, Robert asked, "This early?"
Mary replied, "I can't sleep anyway when I get back home, so why not have breakfast first and then rest?"
After a moment of contemplation, Robert nodded, "Sure."
The two of them walked along the roadside, searching for a restaurant, and entered an open one.
Meanwhile, Matthew returned to the Montagu Mansion but didn't find Mary there.
He immediately woke up the butler to inquire.
The butler was stunned, "Ms. Smith has been in her room all along."
Matthew's face darkened, "She's gone."
The butler exclaimed, "What? Did she leave in the middle of the night? It's my fault. I slept too deeply. Sir, please call Ms. Smith now. It's not safe for a girl to be outside at this hour."
Suddenly, Matthew thought of the call she had made earlier.
He found a spare phone and called Mary's, but this time, it went straight to voicemail.
Why was it off?
Matthew felt a strange sense of panic, got up immediately, and drove to Mary's residence. Throughout the journey, he kept scanning the sides of the road, hoping to spot Mary.
But there was no sign of her.
Even when he arrived at her building and looked up, he saw that her apartment light was off.
Matthew continued calling her, but it remained switched off.
Had she already fallen asleep?
Clutching the phone tightly, Matthew felt extremely agitated.
After a while, he called Sam.
"Find out where Mary is now."
Sam replied reluctantly, "I prefer not to."
Matthew's tone turned cold, "Sam, this is an order!"
Sam hesitated, "Mr. Montagu, when are you going to divorce that woman?"
Matthew asked sharply, "Are you getting too involved?"
Sam fell silent, then hung up after a while.
Matthew sat in the car, his elegant fingers tapping rhythmically on the steering wheel.
Ten minutes later, just as his patience was wearing thin, he saw two figures approaching from a distance.
His eyes narrowed dangerously.
