Chapter 703: Won't Let Go

Victoria let go of Mary's hand, a hint of weariness on her face. "I've talked so much, I'm tired now. You all should head back."

Matthew suddenly spoke up, "Grandma, didn't you want to see me? Why haven't you said much to me since I got here, but you've been holding her hand and talking?"

Victoria sighed, "Are you really going to nitpick over something so small? No wonder Mary doesn't want you anymore; you're too petty!"

Matthew fell silent.

Mary smiled and said, "I'm a bit thirsty, so I'm going to get a drink."

She looked at Victoria, "Would you like something, Grandma?"

Victoria's eyes lit up, "Sure, I'd like an orange soda."

Mary nodded, "Okay."

She turned and left.

As the door closed, the previously relaxed atmosphere was replaced by a subtle chill.

Matthew gazed at Victoria, "Grandma, you've done all this just to protect your son. Deep down, you never really thought much of Mary, right?"

To protect Richard, she even gave the family heirloom to Mary. What else could he do?

Victoria looked at him, "Matthew, he is still your father."

"Is he?"

Matthew suddenly stood up, his tall figure moving to the window. He looked out at the bleak scenery and said quietly, "To me, he doesn't deserve the title of father."

He had witnessed his mother fall to her death as a child, while Richard held his mistress with disdain.

Richard had always ignored him, his eyes only seeing profit and Samuel.

Growing up, Matthew always had one question.

If Richard didn't love his mother, why marry her?

Why have him?

Richard had another child, born to his first wife. But back then, Richard's position was unstable, and he had many enemies. His eldest son was kidnapped at three years old, and his first wife was taken too, trying to protect him. Richard cornered the kidnappers at sea, and they threw his first wife and son overboard.

Only the newborn second son, Samuel, survived.

Later, Richard married Matthew's mother, gaining resources and rising to power.

But once the Montagu Group was secure, Richard took over Matthew's mother's family business and began living a life of debauchery.

Matthew's mother couldn't stand it. After several arguments, Richard began to neglect her. She was a fragile woman and eventually jumped to her death.

Matthew was only four years old at the time.

Matthew closed his eyes, a coldness spreading through him. He said indifferently, "Grandma, enjoy your retirement here. Don't worry about those things. Everyone has their own path."

Victoria closed her eyes, realizing Matthew had no intention of sparing Richard.

The relationship between Richard and Matthew had now become irreconcilable.

After a long pause, Victoria said, "Fine, I won't worry about it anymore. You can go, I'm tired."

Matthew sat back in his wheelchair, looking at Victoria's wrinkled, aged face, a complex emotion flickering in his eyes.

He maneuvered his wheelchair out of the room. As he exited the elevator, he saw Mary standing not far away, looking at the scenery outside.

The view from the nursing home was beautiful, designed by renowned landscape architects. Even though it was autumn and the place had a sense of desolation, the unique beauty of the season was still evident.
