Chapter 19 It's her wishful thinking
Matthew stared at her for a while before sitting back down. "I mean to, but seeing you being injured like this, I'm not the one to bully the disabled."
Mary tugged at the corner of her lips. "Thank you for your magnanimity."
'Fake gratitude. Hollow conversation.' she thought.
It seemed like there was a glass wall between which they could see and even touch each other, the previous feelings were gone.
It all started yesterday when Mary took the initiative to mention divorce.
Feeling inexplicably irritated, Matthew loosened his collar and said, "Just take good care of yourself these days. Let someone else handle the project."
Mary asked, "Is this considered a work injury?"
Matthew looked at her without saying a word.
Mary continued, "A work injury deserves compensation, right? I am thinking a few hundred thousand dollars. You know my account number. Just wire it."
Matthew thought,'Since when did Mary become such a gold-digger after agreeing the divorce?'
First, she asked for a 3,000-square-foot Ranch-style house and ten million dollars, and now a few hundred thousand more.
Matthew coldly said, "You've really gotten the gold mine."
Mary's smile vanished, saying, "If I had known I would get so much money from divorcing you, I would have agreed a long time ago."
Matthew's face instantly darkened.
At that moment, the door was open. and Laura was there with a gentle smile. "Matthew, I'm done with my check-up. Shall we go?"
Matthew walked over. "Didn't I tell you to wait for me?"
Laura said, "I'd like to check on how Ms. Smith is doing. Is she fine ?"
"Yeah, fine."
Mary said, "Could you both leave? I need to rest."
It was really her wishful thinking.
Instead of being by Mary's side, it turned out Matthew was here with Laura for her check-up. It felt like Mary had torn open a wound, letting in the cold wind, making her painful and cold.
Laura said anxiously, "Ms. Smith, don't get me wrong, actually..."
"Go out, I have told you!"
Mary didn't even want to hear or see neither of them anymore.
Their intimacy and familiarity seemed to mock how ridiculous she had been in the past year.
She wasn't ridiculous. She had just misjudged the man.
Matthew's face darkened slightly. "Mary, it isn't Laura's fault. There's no need to blame her."
Watching him defend Laura, Mary's heart hurt again.
Mary stared at him. "Matthew Montagu, get out."
Laura was irritated. "Ms. Smith, if you have any beef with us, come at me. Why treat Matthew like this? He has done nothing wrong!"
Matthew grabbed Laura's arm. "I'll take you back first."
Laura looked at him with concern but obediently nodded.
They finally left. Mary slammed the bed hard, whose eyes turned red with anger! 'He hasn't done anything wrong? He's done plenty wrong! Why did he barge into her life? Why did he abandon her when she loved him wholeheartedly? He hadn't done anything wrong to Laura, but he had truly wronged Mary!' Mary thought a lot on bed.
Damn Matthew, ten million dollars was too less for him!
Mary took out her phone and called Matthew, but to her dismay, he hung up!
Great! Mary texted instead: [Divorce settlement: thirty million dollars. Not a penny less, or you'll never get rid of me!]
Mary and Matthew were still husband and wife, yet he was blatantly protecting Laura. Had he not considered Mary's feelings at all?
