Chapter 296 I'm Scared, Stay with Me

Mary's eyes popped wide open. "I seduced you? What kinda crap are you spewing?"

'How the heck could I seduce him?' she thought.

Matthew's eyes, full of mischief, drifted down to her chest.

Mary glanced down, and when she saw her flimsy nightgown and the outline of her, her face turned beet red!

She quickly covered her chest and bolted, screaming internally, 'Oh my God! I forgot my jacket! I've been parading around like this, no wonder he's been ogling me!'

Even though they'd done the most intimate things before, right now, Mary just wanted to find a hole to crawl into!

'This is mortifying!' she thought, cringing.

Back in the guest room, she plopped onto the bed, trying to calm down.

She buried herself in the blanket, her cheeks still burning.

This was so freaking awkward.

In the living room, Matthew only looked away after Mary dashed back to her room. He called someone to clear the table, then sat at his desk and got back to work.

But every now and then, when he thought of her embarrassed face, a tiny smile crept onto his lips.

Night rolled in.

Mary had taken another nap and woke up in the middle of the night.

She was thirsty, groggily got up, and grabbed her water cup, only to find it empty.

This time, she made sure to grab a jacket before heading out for water.

To her surprise, the living room light was still on.

Matthew was deep in his work. Hearing the noise, he looked up, his eyes dark and intense.

"Feeling better?"

Mary nodded, "Yeah."

She poured a glass of water and sipped it slowly.

Neither of them said another word.

Mary, holding her water cup, was about to head back. She glanced at him instinctively. He was in a bathrobe, the light casting a soft glow on him, even his hair seemed to shimmer.

At that moment, he leaned back, pinched the bridge of his nose, his profile sharp and defined, cold and charming, yet showing a hint of fatigue.

Suddenly, she said with concern, "You look beat, you should hit the sack."

It was already one in the morning.

There was always work to be done.

Matthew turned his head to look at her and asked, "Have you made up your mind?"

Mary paused. "I've been sleeping the whole time."

'When do I have time to think about it?' she mused.

Matthew said, "Then think about it now. I'll give you five minutes."

Mary was silent.

She was about to laugh out of frustration!

'Does Matthew think I can make such a big decision in five minutes? What is he thinking?' she wondered.

"Four and a half minutes left," his voice sounded again.

Mary turned to go back to her room, but just then, the doorbell rang.

Matthew got up, but instead of opening the door, he walked towards her.

Mary was puzzled and looked at him suspiciously. "Aren't you gonna get the door? Why are you coming to me?"

Matthew took her hand and said, "I'm scared to open the door alone. Come with me."

Mary was utterly confused.

Before she could react, he grabbed her hand and walked towards the door.

'What nonsense is he talking about?' she thought.

She struggled, "No. I want to rest."

Matthew said softly, "It's past midnight. Who would come knocking at this hour? Come with me to check."

It would have been better if he said nothing. Now she was scared to death!

"Well, I'm scared too. Let go of me!"

Mary was a bit freaked out.

But Matthew had already pulled her to the door and reached out to open it.

A person fell right in.
