Chapter 753 Matthew Was Sent Away
As the sun set, the cafeteria buzzed with activity.
The orphanage housed twenty kids in total.
Several tables were set up, and the children gathered around them.
David had the older kids look after the younger ones, and once everything was settled, he made his way over to Mary.
"You don't have to rush off so soon. Have you seen how much Lindenville has changed? The vacation resorts are coming along," David said.
Mary smiled and replied, "I'll come back when I have more time. Honestly, I should be thanking you for everything this time. This drink is for you."
She picked up a beer, smiling warmly at David.
David raised his glass as well. "No need to thank me. We've grown up together; we're practically family."
Mary nodded, "You're right. Cheers."
They clinked glasses and took a drink.
The cafeteria was filled with a lively atmosphere, the children's laughter echoing around them.
Matthew sat nearby, watching Mary and David toast repeatedly, his brow furrowing.
He placed a hand on her arm, "Take it easy on the drinks. You'll get a headache."
Mary frowned and pushed his hand away, "Don't tell me what to do. I want to drink."
David chimed in, "It's okay. There's honey lemon water here. You can have some later."
Matthew shot him a cold look, clearly displeased. "Is this how you treat family? She gets headaches from drinking, and you're just going to let her suffer?"
David paused, taken aback.
Mary interjected, "What's wrong with me having a drink? Matthew, you're so annoying!"
Her irritation was genuine, not an act.
Matthew was visibly upset.
Mary waved him off, "Let's not mind him. Where were we?"
Matthew abruptly stood up and left the cafeteria.
David glanced at him but said nothing, continuing to reminisce with Mary.
Outside, night had fallen, and the cold wind helped Matthew calm down.
She rarely let her emotions show. What was he doing?
He chuckled to himself, ready to head back inside.
Just then, his phone rang. It was the local head of the Montagu Group in Lindenville.
"Mr. Montagu, there's a problem. The government funding has hit a snag. We haven't received a crucial payment, and we can't proceed with the next phase of the project."
Matthew's brow furrowed. The development had government approval; this was a serious issue.
"I'll be there right away."
He said sternly, glancing back at the brightly lit cafeteria before turning to leave.
Mary had drunk quite a bit.
The children had gone to their rooms, and she was slumped over the table, staring blankly ahead.
David brought over some honey lemon water.
"Mary, drink this. You won't have a headache tomorrow."
Mary slowly sat up, looking at him. "Thanks."
She took the glass and drank it all in one go.
David was surprised at how compliant she was after drinking.
He checked the time and said, "It's late. I don't know where Mr. Montagu went, but you should stay another night and leave tomorrow."
Mary looked around, puzzled. "Matthew?"
She called his name, but didn't see him. She pulled out her phone and dialed his number.
