Chapter 468 Sending You a Little Cake
As expected, Sean would start his job tomorrow.
As he was about to leave, Mary walked him to the elevator, flashing a smile. "Congrats!"
Sean grinned shyly, "I owe you one. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have stuck with the career I love."
Mary shrugged, "I just gave you a choice. The rest was all you, so no need to thank me."
Sean pulled out his phone, "Mind if I get your contact info? We'll be colleagues now, and it'll be easier to reach you."
"Sure thing." Mary nodded and took out her phone to exchange numbers.
After they swapped contact info, the elevator arrived. Sean stepped in and waved goodbye.
Back in the office, Maria was leaning against her desk, giving Mary a playful look. "What's up with you two?"
Mary looked puzzled, "What do you mean?"
Maria nodded towards the door, "You and Sean?"
Mary chuckled, "You're reading too much into it. We're just friends."
Maria let out a small sigh of relief, "He's got talent. Since he's your friend, you should look out for him."
Mary nodded, "Of course."
That was her plan all along.
Later that evening.
Mary stayed late, working until 9:30 PM. By the time she left, it was pitch dark outside.
She headed to the curb to hail a cab.
"Ms. Smith!"
A familiar voice called out.
Mary turned to see Sean walking over with a big smile.
"This is for you."
He handed her a small, fancy box, grinning.
Mary looked confused, "What's this?"
Sean scratched his nose, looking a bit awkward, "You helped me a lot, and I wanted to thank you. I know girls like sweets, so I got you a small cake. It's not much, but when I start earning more, I'll get you a bigger one!"
Mary smiled, "I told you, you don't need to thank me. You got this job on your own merit."
Sean insisted, holding out the box, "Ms. Smith, it's just a small cake. You won't turn it down, will you?"
Seeing his determination, Mary took the box, "Alright, I'll take it. But no more gifts, okay?"
"Deal!"
Sean nodded, his eyes sparkling as he looked at her.
Just then, a cab pulled up. Mary quickly hailed it, "I'm off. You should head home too. Stay safe!"
"Will do!"
Sean watched her leave, only turning away when the cab disappeared around the corner.
Someone captured that moment.
Mary got back to Montagu Mansion and immediately sensed a different vibe in the living room.
It felt tense, and the temperature seemed to drop.
On the balcony, Matthew, tall and lean, was smoking. Even in loungewear, he had an air of indifference.
Mary glanced at him briefly before heading upstairs.
Matthew followed her and quickly caught up.
Mary entered the bedroom, and the next second, Matthew had her pinned against the door!
The fresh scent of tobacco filled the air!
