Chapter 788 Cherish While Doing

Mary was lounging in the living room, flipping through TV channels. Matthew had just ditched his suit jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and tidied up the dining room and kitchen before joining her.

Seeing her sitting cross-legged with a pillow hugged to her chest, bathed in the soft glow of the lamp, she looked like a picture-perfect scene.

Matthew stepped into that scene.

He plopped down next to Mary, his eyes drifting to the TV.

It was some historical fantasy show, with impressive makeup and costumes, and the actors were pretty good.

She was totally into it.

Matthew, on the other hand, wasn't feeling it. His gaze wandered to her face.

He figured there were better ways to spend their time than watching TV.

"Have you decided yet?" he asked quietly, his voice blending with the TV dialogue.

Mary's eyelashes fluttered. "Let me finish this episode."

Matthew chuckled and draped his arm around her shoulders.

Mary tensed up for a second but then slowly relaxed.

The episode ran for 45 minutes, and Matthew even chatted about the plot with her now and then.

It felt like they had never been this peaceful and cozy before, a gentle warmth flowing between them.

Matthew almost believed they were deeply in love, that this was their new normal.

"Alright."

The episode ended, and Mary reached for the remote to turn off the TV.

She set the remote aside, placed the pillow next to her, and climbed onto his lap, kissing him on the lips.

It felt mechanical, like a routine task, lacking any real emotion.

Matthew squinted his eyes and stared at her. He didn't move, letting her take the lead.

Her kissing had improved, with hints of his influence.

When Mary's tongue brushed against his lips, he responded, holding the back of her head and her waist, deepening the kiss.

Night fell, and stars dotted the sky outside the window.

The room was filled with an intimate atmosphere, yet their hearts felt miles apart, unable to bridge the gap.

When it was over, Mary was exhausted. Matthew carried her to the bathroom, bathed her, and dressed her in pajamas.

Lying in bed, she reached out to him again. "Give it to me."

Matthew pushed her hand back. "It'll be in your email."

Mary, reassured, closed her eyes to sleep. "You can go now. Don't forget to close the door."

Matthew was speechless.

He suddenly began to wonder who was benefiting more from this arrangement, him or her?

Thinking of Mary's passionate moments, Matthew fell silent.

But then he thought, who knew how many more times they could be this close?

He should cherish it while it lasted.

Matthew leaned down and kissed Mary's forehead.

"Goodnight."

Then he got up and left.

The door closed, and Mary opened her eyes. In the darkness, her eyes sparkled, as if the walls around her were slowly crumbling.

The next day.

Mary saw the email.

It contained the entire process of the arson and drugging incidents, with Rebecca's involvement clearly marked.

She couldn't help but wonder if she presented this evidence to the Cooper family, would they believe it?

Rebecca was their beloved daughter, raised and cherished for years. Would they be willing to give up all those years of effort?
