Chapter 754 On Fire
"Matthew," Mary whispered his name as she dialed his number.
David watched her and shook his head, feeling helpless.
Maybe even Mary herself hadn't realized she wasn't avoiding Matthew as much as she used to.
People's hearts were fragile. When faced with kindness, apologies, and pleas for forgiveness, how could they not waver?
The busy signal buzzed in her ear, and the mechanical sound made Mary a bit annoyed.
Why wasn't Matthew answering her call?
Where was he?
Eventually, the phone automatically hung up.
"If he doesn't answer my call, then forget him," Mary muttered, then wobbled to her feet and headed outside.
David quickly supported her to prevent her from falling.
Mary pushed him away and said, "I'm fine. I can manage."
David followed closely behind her, ready to catch her at any moment. After all, she had drunk quite a bit, and it was normal for her to be unsteady on her feet.
Fortunately, despite her slightly swaying and zigzagging path, she didn't fall.
Back in her room, David said, "Get some rest. I'll leave now. Call me if you need anything."
"Okay." Mary nodded.
David gave her a long look before closing the door. She lay on the bed with her eyes closed, completely unguarded.
After closing the door, he turned and left.
Mary fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.
In a daze, she smelled a strong, acrid smoke. What was going on?
How could there be smoke in the orphanage?
The smell grew stronger, and Mary opened her eyes to see the room filling with smoke.
Her mind still foggy, she sat up and looked around in confusion. Then she saw the flickering flames outside the window.
In that instant, she sobered up!
Fire!
Mary quickly got out of bed, grabbed her coat, and ran to the bathroom. She soaked the coat thoroughly before draping it over herself and heading for the door.
She didn't expect that as soon as she cracked the door open, flames surged in!
The hallway was engulfed in even fiercer flames!
Faintly, Mary heard the cries of the children.
She quickly shut the door, her face turning pale.
How could this happen?
How could there be a sudden fire?
Without thinking further, Mary grabbed her phone to call the fire department.
But the signal was blocked!
She couldn't even get through to the fire department!
This was deliberate!
Someone wanted to burn them alive!
What a cruel mind!
"Mary, Mary!"
David's muffled voice came from outside.
Mary shouted back, "I'm fine! Save the kids!"
It seemed he heard her because he stopped calling her name.
But staying in this room wasn't a solution either.
The smoke was getting thicker. If she didn't get out, she might pass out from the fumes and die without even knowing it.
Mary hurried to the window, only to find that the screens were welded shut to prevent the kids from being mischievous.
She couldn't get out!
But at least it allowed some ventilation.
The smoke was slowly being dispersed, and Mary kept an ear out for any sounds from the hallway.
With the window open, she didn't dare open the door. The draft could pull the flames inside.
She could only wait.
Just then, the door was kicked open with a loud bang.
Mary's expression immediately tensed. "Who's there?"
"Mrs. Montagu, it's me!"
North's voice came through.
